I love that song and I love your story and picture. From the moment I saw your title, I've been singing the song, so thanks for the refresher on the words, as I forgot some of them : ). It is a lovely tale of girl meets boy, and the horrible stress in our early years of first dates. I love your question to your dad referring to putting his hand on your knee, "why would he want to do that?" So do you mind if I ask you a question? True story??

Have you still got that song in your head?
Yes, this is a true story of my first date and my parents' concern that all would be well.

Lol, no I finally got rid of it yesterday while writing of our clinics shooting, but now that you mention it, its back,,,,,haha!

Thank you for telling this sweet story swirling with a lovely innocence. May I suggest you go to YouTube and find the "Foxes & Fossils" version of this song-- they are the best cover band on earth. Watch and listen and become a fan! I'd love to hear your response!

I hadn't heard of Foxes & Fossils before (I don't live in USA) so thank you for pointing me in their direction. Yes, that was a wonderful cover version - lovely harmonising.

And they just released a new one: Dance With Me
Absolutely wonderful. I'm such a fan!!!

Aaah... that's another great song. I listened to F&F version and agree with your assessment of their quality.

Love the song, and love the post! I would have given you a six (but unfortunately none left), because it is both meaningful and clever. It's a perfect entry for the contest. (I promised Tom I would enter, but my entry is nowhere near this good! Lol. So I hope you win!)

Thanks for your supportive comments. I read your entry and it is terrific. I think judging will be interesting because it is poems as well as stories and I think poetry has more followers.

Oh LisaMay I love that song. Lyrics and tune. This is an excellent entry for the prompt. You use the key phrase in different ways while interweaving it into a relaxed entertaining narrative.

A small suggestion. Not important for the prompt but something that occurred to me as I read

Why not drop "naively" in the penultimate paragraph? Her question and the parents' response show her inexperience clearly enough

Thanks for sharing

Good luck in the voting booth

Stay safe and blessed

That song seems to be striking a chord with most reviewers. Thanks for your suggestion - it made me revisit the last paragraph and I have modified it somewhat, leaving out naively.

Thanks for your review. My response to my father's question showed just how innocent I was. I'm surprised my parents let me go on a date. Federico was a year older than me but my parents knew his parents - he was a nice Italian boy raised by strict parents.

Keith Whitley sang it and was spot on especially for a romantic composition, as you may have experienced with Fredrico. The eyes are the windows to the soul; the tongue can be like a sword, severing everything two built up. Thanks for your entry.

Thanks for setting up the contest prompt Tom, and for reviewing my story. They don't say 'silence is golden' for nothing.

I know that song and love it as well. THis is a brilliant piece that deals with coming of age issues and a young girl's first steps out into the dating world. It leave es the reader recalling their own first experiences.

I am a big believer in silence as sometimes we talk too often and make matters worse than they are, I enjoyed your intuitive write Lisa.

Did you miss a word out here?

"remember the companionship (of) our family dog,"

Much better than rabbit, rabbit, rabbit all the time about nothing. You had some good advice back then as you now realise. I thought this was a clever response to the prompt too.

What a nice writing point to write about. Yes. Sometimes not saying anything is the deepest communication. We have body language and our expressions which can always convey information and desire, especially in a dating situation. Talking can spoil it sometimes.

Well done.
