This is a touching story. It is inspiring to read about a genuine hero like William Edwin Dyess. True bravery when he stayed with his on-fire P-38, crashing it where he knew no other lives would be lost while sacrificing his own.
In 1957, had the privilege of meeting a USN Commander who had been through the Bataan Death March. Showed me a waist-up photo of him, covered with scars.
I was only 5 when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. All the relatives came to our house for a War Conference. My Dad was 39, but together with all our relatives, enlisted in the US Navy and Army, in January, 1942. My Dad was gone 3 1/2 years and was a different man when he came back.

What a 'rip'. Forced to resign over going to a concert and having fun? I could see it maybe if he had worn his full-dress uniform and still wore the Alice Cooper makeup, but the colonel's action was totally unwarranted.

Wow, ok, Ross Perot. Name dropper or something. Quite the acquaintance.
Oh my gosh. Just came out and asked Ross Perot for ten million dollars. That is some Moxy! What is more fascinating is that she got it. I wish I had friends like that.

Very compelling. Heartbreaking but spirit lifting at the same time. This guy must have been a real patriot, to sacrifice his own life rather than risk the lives of those in the 'heavily populated' area.
What is even more astonishing, I'm sure there are more stories similar to this. Very interesting, even in its brevity I could grasp the impact of the tale. Well done, thanks for the entertainment.

Hi Terry, thought I would take a break from writing thank you messages and be refreshed by your awesome stories! And what great stories they were. Fist of all, these were all magnificent people in your life. I can't believe Bryce was made to resign because of a concert that he dressed up for, but I' m sure that the controversy with his prestigious job could have looked bad if the public had gotten wind of that. Ben and Nell seemed like lovely and driven people who were no strangers to the celebrity side of life. And Nell was a woman who knew what she needed and was willing to go after it. I remember Ross Perot vaguely, but knew he was very wealthy. Didn't he run for president as the 3rd party candidate? They certainly lived a long and full life!
And your story of Nell's brother, William Dyess was a remarkable hero, that deserves to be in the history books and should go down as one of the bravest men of that era. I was totally absorbed by these stories and how these people intertwined with your life as well. Fascinating read Terry, and a very enjoyable break from an unnecessary worrisome day, thanks to you and a few other awesome friends here. Thanks so much for sharing this, as your life seems to get more amazing with every story I read. I try never to miss yours, because I always know I will always be amazed!

General Douglas MacArthur retreated from the Philippines. Captain Dyess elected to stay with his men and continue the fight. [To me, this would be more effective as a comparative with "While" before "General" and a comma instead of a period after the first sentence, joining them.]
Along with a hand full of other soldiers, [Along with a HANDFUL of other soldiers ...]
I'll be looking forward to the remainder of the series. I'm thrilled you decided to stick around longer before taking your vacation from us.
