What an interesting story, Terry! David had a difficult beginning to life, but found his way on his own. He encountered some terrible things, but learned a great lesson as well. Who would have imagined he'd end up a popular artist. Well done.

I know nothing about native American art, but what a fascinating life this man led. I was particularly moved to read the part about the German doctor and the impact he had.

Oh, I wish I could see the art. This story is so wonderful and so well told. I couldn't believe the part about the maggots and the chicken. My goodness! I never heard of such a thing, but the doctor knew. Exceptional writing, Terry. You're All Time Best for sure!

Sending you my best today as always,
Sal :))

The Creator has a hand in all our lives, whatever our backgrounds. Your story about David is a case of 'truth is stranger than fiction'. What a progression of amazing experiences, told convincingly and engagingly, showing curiosity, resourcefulness, and ability rising above extreme difficulties. The human spirit, and inherent humanity, overcomes adversity writ large.

The author recounts a narrative of poverty, homelessness, starvation, bravery, and one's pursuit of a goal. The author demonstrates that motivation and creativity, and achievements are attainable irrespective of one's background or heritage. The story should be a movies

This was a great story. I am glad things worked out for David. He was lucky to have lived. He was saved because it was not his time to die. I can not imagine what he went through. Thank you for sharing. I really like Native American art and pottery. Have a great day.

Hi, Terry,

I owe you a review that's long overdue. You'd reviewed my story, "Wading In," and I've read your stories "The Last Conversation, 1990" and "The Conversation," and I was positive I'd left you at least one review--but apparently, I hadn't. Sorry about that!

Anyway, I like this story, and it really resonates with me. I spent half a dozen years in northern Arizona, recognize your illustration of the Four Corners area, worked construction for a while, had several Navajo and Hopi Indian friends who were my co-workers, and spent more than a little time on the Hopi and Navajo Indian Reservations.

I'm surprised that the OSS sent David to Europe instead of using him for a Code-Talker in the Pacific Theater, but somehow, I'm not surprised. I'm also not surprised about him being tortured at Daschau for befriending a Jew. Unbelievable cruelty!

I did wonder if the leaches might have been used medicinally, but that was erased for me when I read about the chicken entrails. Hadn't thought about their nutritional value, though.

Anyway, incredibly moving story about David resolving not to ever hate another person again. Wish I could say the same myself.

No flaws in your writing that I could see, and and a very beautiful story. Well done!

Sincerely,

J. P.

This is an extraordinary story about an extraordinary human! You have taken the research you had to do, boiled it down to the necessary facts, and retold it in a jaw-dropping fashion. This man did more in his life than 100 other people put together. Yes, I would agree that a divine hand guided this man.
