Terry, what an incredible story this is! It's not hard to understand how two such young boys were able to get by with their travels at such young ages, as that was an era where young men often journeyed out on their own. (sometime I'll tell you the story of my father joining the Navy at the start of the war, to help his newly widowed mother feed the family) Anyway this is amazing all that they went through with their companions. You held my interest right up to the end and made me wish for more. Your writing is amazing and since we've become friends, I've taken mental notes with every story of yours that I read. Thank you, as this was so powerful!

Debi, thank you very much for such a kind review. I have one more story written, it is in preview right now. I will release it in a few days. It does have a Navy component and an Air Force component. Terry

I will definitely be looking forward to it. I also meant to thank you for your great review. I always hate when they save it before you're ready.

Thank you for this very interesting story of an amazing life. Your writing is smooth, easy to read, and conversational in style, especially at the beginning.

This is a fascinating story. Of course, my first thought is, what happened to Joe? The rest is amazing. To have survived is an accomplishment, but I realized the doctor's treatment would save him. Although the chicken guts don't sound right, it was probably the only meat he could get for a prisoner. You were probably very lucky to get the painting when you did as it would likely cost considerably more if David's work has become tony. You did a very good job of writing this, but you haven't done a bad job on anything you have written.

Carol, thank you for reading and reviewing. You asked a good question about Joe, I don't know. I could find not any reference to him after they were debriefed by the OSS. I would like to know too. I also think you are right about the raw chicken, good job analyzing. Terry.

OMG - what an extraordinary story! At first I was cheering that the German officers and doctors had to face justice, but I was as shocked as David to learn how that particular doctor saved his life.

What an amazing life and an amazing artist. Thank you for sharing this. This is the kind of story that will stay with me. Best regards, Lilly

What a fascinating story this is, Terry! I'd imagine most people haven't heard of David Paladin. There is quite a market for this "little-known history" genre of writing. I made a few suggestions below. Since I downloaded this early this AM and it's now 3:30 PM, some of the needed corrections have probably been made. They are, for the most part, editing errors and certainly don't take away from the inherent entertainment and education value your post provides. If you did try to publish this elsewhere, I'd suggest listing your sources at the end (much like Lyenochka does her posts). Here, then are the suggestions:

The next day the cousins, about ten years old, hitchhike to Chicago. [Make sure you keep to the same tense: "hitchhiked"]

At the Embaracadero, they stow-a-away [... they STOWED AWAY]

So, they joined the OSS, the Office of Strategic Servies eventually, this organization would become the CIA. [There are several things wrong with this sentence, Terry. First, I believe it should be "...Strategic Services". There should be a full stop there. "Eventually" should begin a new sentence, which may or may not be put in parentheses.]

and made him eat raw chicken entails. [... raw chicken ENTRAILS]

In short, the German doctor had saved David's life. [I wonder if, in your research, it was made clear whether that doctor used the maggots and leeches as intended therapy. Even so, I'd think that conventional (cooked) food would have given him nourishment to heal. I'm sure the American doctor meant his facts as ironic, wouldn't you think?]

Keep these kinds coming. They are so good!

Thanks, Jay. I do know about crediting sources, but this is the only place it goes.

All the other edits were corrected early. Susan Newell raked me good on the ones you found and some others she found.

I don't know if the German doctor intended what he did as therapy. I think the raw chicken was probably the only food the doctor could get for a prisoner. The German's real motivation would have been interesting to know.

I have one more story that is written and in preview, I will post it maybe later in the week, I think it is really good, and then that will be all from me for a while. I am going to take a break. I do thank you for all your support. Terry.

A sad but beautiful story with a happy ending. Real life is often a sad situation. Praise the Lord this young man was saved from the death camps and found his place in life, speaking his story through paintings. Life is never simple nor safe. This is told very well. May God continue to work in you & your writings.

What an interesting story to read. Thank you for sharing it. I love Indian art, and living in Oklahoma, I have seen plenty here. I've also been blessed and got to travel around the country, so I've seen different types. Great job. Enjoy the rest of your Sunday. Shirley

What an amazing story of this talented artists, Terry. You told it
well. I didn't know of him, but it sounded like he was resourceful
from an early age. His many trials--esp in the death camp--were
horrendous. To be able for him to say he would never hate another
person in his life was an awesome summation of what he had become
and where he'd been and was headed.
Respectfully, Jan

It is y firm conviction that the things that happen top us in life inform our creative juices to direct our efforts in one direction or another. A person without any unpleasant incidents in their life will, I believe produce uninteresting art that will fail to impress and inspire those who observe it.
The memory of a traumatic incident in my life awakened in me the interest I developed in writing poetry, several years after the incident.

This is an incredible yet unimaginable story. You told it with passion, compassion and facts.
I am part Native American, Choctaw tribe, so I have an understanding and great appreciation for both the dreadful stories of our peoples and the extraordinary artwork born from those experiences. Thanks for sharing.
