Sorry I missed this, but I see it was for a contest and they're usually blind. This is a tragic incident. Accidents like this can so often be prevented. If her hair got caught in the machine, the girl surely didn't have it protected. Seems like the company policy should have been that employees wear a hairnet or something to keep their hair out of harm's way. This tragic accident is a reminder that safety should come first. I think in the U.S. there are laws in place regarding employee safety, but sometimes they're not followed. Especially sad that this young lady was about to be married. Very powerfully written. judi

The episode happened in Italy .
She was working in a factory run by relatives.
To save time the safety screen was left up at all times..
having worked for years with a machine , people get to confident and less attentive.
I read a few weeks ago a 24 year old girl in an eastern country was killed when her hair got caught up in a machine during a visit
the owner was showing her the factory for a possible job. ( shock)
She was not given a security cap.
Those machines are diabolic.

Your eyeopening poem reports a very important piece of history: The Haymarket Riot which 5 years later in 1889 became a symbol of international struggles for workers' rights.
We both only received one vote so far.. voters prefer reading about the beauty of Spring . (sigh)

Sometimes accidents happen out of stupidity but often they are caused by poor working conditions ..this should not happen ..in my country these deaths are referred to as " White Deaths".

When I was a mocho-man tough guy I took a job as an armed security guard. I worked in the main lobby of a bank. I also worked on an armored truck. When working on the armored truck, we dropped off and picked up cash money at places like McDonaid's, and KFC. (big bucks) When I say we, there were three of us working on the one truck. One of us did the driving. That's all. One of us went in the places of business, delivered money, and picked up money. That's all. When we made each of our stops...I was the one who opened the door...peered outside, stepped out on the sidewalk, and made sure that everything was safe and clear. Was that a scary job? Is a pig's tail pork? Needless to say that I survived that job to tell about it today. But yet I agree with You, my friend. Workers shouldn't have to fear for their lives, nor loved ones be left to share tears. Ha ha ha. I guess we can rightly say that I dodged a bullet on that job, huh? God bless you, my friend. That was a dangerous, nerve wracking job .. you wore a gun I imagine .. had you experience already in the police force or in the army?
Your guardian angel must have been doing lots of over time, to keep you safe.
I have seen a couple of films where the security guards of armoured trucks always get shot. (sigh)
Being always under pressure/stress must have taken a toll on your health in the long run.
Lucia for three years in the 90s worked on the highway tolls ..it was good pay but it was not a safe job either.

I probably wouldn't have died but could have been injured badly - I don't do it any more: not worth it!

Glad to hear you quit...being manned for life is nearly worse than being killed. You could have broken your back.
In Italy people that die due to an accident while on the job are referred to as "morti bianche" white deaths ..
the adjective "white" alludes to the absence of a directly responsible hand of the accident.

The contest mentions in brackets "first day of May" so seeing the first is Labour Day, I thought it was appropriate.
In Europe, we remember those that died on the job. They are referred to as "white deaths" in my country.

Actually, the contest is entitled May Day
and the person that created the contest also added in brackets ( First day of May) so I think the poem is supposed to be about Labour Day which is celebrated on the Ist of May.
Sorry , I didn?t want to upset you or readers but the first of May is a day of remembrance.. in my country those that died on the job are called white deaths.
