Commonsense and stickability. With those two weapons in a bloke's armoury, most things that life throws can be overcome. Your aside about the Army, reminded me of the apocryphal Officers' Confidential Report: His men would follow him anywhere, but only out of curiosity.

There are people with much book learning, however, when it comes to common sense, look out. They are a danger to themselves and anyone around. One incident, my daughter had written a check to me. A few weeks later, she came over to my house talking about her checking account, having $80.00 more than she thought. I called her Blondie, and said,
"That is because I have not cashed your check for the money you borrowed ."
She does not have any common sense. Which is scary Thank you for sharing.

You gave very good examples of lessons learned from your parents. It's hard to pick out one or two things, because up to a certain young age, you learn everything from parents. Then, when you ventured out into society, parents teach you how to interpret what you've encountered. This is a well written tribute to your parents. Best wishes in the contest.
