Thanks for sharing! I feel so sad for your little sister. Poor thing, I have totally been in that position of wanting something that seems so small and harmless (and is really) but i then disregard the principles that were trying to be taught.

Trust a little kid to choose the most ostentatious ring. Oh I can just imagine your exasperated mother chasing you, all crying noisily. Often the threat of punishment is just as bad and just as instructive.
We had similar obligations with our pocket money - Mum was the churchgoer (Dad proclaimed himself an atheist, while leading a most Christian life).
Was that the Commonwealth Bank in your school days with the tin?
Your dialogue makes this story really come alive. I struggle with integrating dialogue.

Thanks so much for reviewing. I always value your input.
Well, we certainly learned not to steal or lie!! So the result was achieved. Neither of my parents went to church, but we had to attend Sunday School till we were twelve at which point we were allowed to choose whether to continue.
Yes, the Commonwealth bank - do you remember those little tins?

We don't hear about the strap much anymore, do we? Or the mouths being washed out with soap, for that matter. It's not usually the mother who delivers corporeal punishment. And in most cases, it is the worrying about it that's worse than the physical pain. So I gather, little Robbie didn't get her strapping?

This looks like just what the contest judges will be looking for. Good luck, Wendy.

Thank you Jay - a wonderful review. These days such punishments would be counted as child abuse. However, no-one got the strap in the end - our poor exasperated mother just gave up I think. But we learnt the lesson about not stealing and not lying!! Thanks again.
