I enjoyed reading your post.
I love that your grandson saw only Jerry's green shirt as something that made him different, and I couldn't agree more with what you want your grandchildren to know.
There IS only one race - the human race. Racism is something that is learned, it's not 'there' from the start.

And may that wisdom of innocence carry forward through adult life :-). Children aren't naturally racist - they have to learn that from someone. I was lucky enough to grown up amongst a broad mix of ethnicities and in a family that never made a point of it, but (looking back) never judged anyone based on anything other than their actions.

What an excellent example to leave behind to your children. It's a shame that race was ever an obstacle to begin with but here we are, and so it must be, the need for us to go out of our way to teach what is right! Kudos to you! A wonderful message indeed.

I have no more 6 ratings I may give this week. However, I felt this essay deserved it. You blessed me today with your note to your grandchildren entry. As an African American woman, I have been feeling a bit raw after the Buffalo TOPS Supermarket shooting. I am the age of some of the elder victims. The 9 church members killed by Dylan Roof and the killing at the supermarket impacted me greatly. It signaled I am no longer safe in my country. Ironically, I am an old veteran too. It is white people like you who make black people feel like they are just wearing green clothing and that there is HOPE! Thank you!
