What a wonderful teacher! I wonder how many teachers like Barbara are out there that we never hear about. You've written a very good essay, it held my attention throughout. Regards, Lilly

Hello my friend,
a great read.... Oh that everyone should get a Barbara in their lives... I've had one or two.

Maybe kids today could use some basement time... I have an image of Joe Biden!

Thank you and thanks for the six stars, I appreciate them. I do think kids today could use more disipline. We never felt abused because we got our hind ends spanked. We learned respect for authority and parents instead.

I loved your essay. It told of a simpler time when teachers were allowed to discipline kids and have expectations of good behavior at school and in your brother's case to and from school. As a retired educator, I appreciated every aspect of this essay. Reading aloud to kids is so important. I did it when I taught middle school and high school. I look forward to reading more of your writings.

Thank you. I bet you would have liked Barbara. It is good to know other teachers read to children too. Hugs.

You are most welcome. The HS students pretend they do not want to be read to, but they stay mighty quiet when I am reading. LOL

You were very fortunate. I was taught by my two older sisters. Their idea was my being the only boy in the family, I was not allowed to be dumb. So, they set out to tech me everything they themselves were learning. I was four years younger than the youngest of the two sisters. So, by the time I entered first grade I knew quite a bit more than my other classmates. The problem for me was that my teachers were advised by my sisters of what they had done. My teachers expected much more from me than I was sometimes willing to give. This was punished in class and at home. The advantage of course was that I have pretty much been too smart for my own good, and too lazy to take full advantage.

Thank you. It sounds like you lived an interesting life. I can't imagine being taught by any of my siblings. I had seven brothers and four sisters. All my brothers taught me was how to survive. Hugs

Hi Mystery Author,
I enjoyed this story about your favorite school teacher. And I especially liked the part about your very first day at school, trying to keep up to your brother, Ken, and how you were so upset when you got there. That was so mean of him. But at least Barbara had a talk with him, and he was nicer after that.
Parents were more lenient years ago. Parents of today (most of them, anyway) would never let their little girl walk to school like that, especially on the very first day of Grade One. When I was a wee lad, my mother would send me to the corner grocery store for whatever. I had to cross the road, too, and I was only 6 or 7 years old. We would never let our kids do that today! Ever! It's crazy when you think about it.
I had a couple of terrific teachers. In Grade 7, Miss Josie London came to school one day with a large magazine... Look or Life, probably. And she read us about the abduction of Betty and Barney Hill. UFOs and aliens! Boy oh boy, did I ever watch the skies after that!
And in Grade 8, Mrs. Joyce Mersereau would haul out "White Fang" at the end of the day, and read to us! We looked forward to that story every day.
I had two really good Math teachers, too... Mrs. Bedford in Grade 6 and Mr. Sutton in Grade 11.
But It was Mr. Hanson who got me interested in writing.
Those were the days! Funny, I hated school, but I loved my teachers.
Good Luck in the contest!
Cheers,
Kimbob

Thank you. Yeah, we used to wander all over the country when we were kids and no one ever bothered us. My girlfriend and I walked everwhere alone. You wouldn't dare let two little girls roam the country like we did now. Dad almost never took us to or from school. He was working on the farm and everybody's kids walked to school in those day anyway. It was just the way things were in the fifties. Hugs

This piece reminds me of my favorite teacher. He was my eighth grade teacher. He was one of the main reasons that I became a teacher. Fifty years went by before I tried to find him. When I finally located his house, the occupant said he had passed away the previous year. Do not put off the important things in life. That is the lesson for the day.

Thank you. Barbara was a cousin too so I often saw her at reunions. She passed away eight years ago. I never had another teacher like her. Hugs.

I think you're right. I believe the world would be a whole better place if kids got some "basement time." I am not a fan of the "everybody is special and gets a trophy" world we live in. Good luck in the contest.

Thank you. I agree. We didn't feel abused, we learned to respect or parents and teachers. Kids today have no respect for anybody.

Very nicely written. Good work.
Mine was Mrs. Sweet. Though we were only in the one-room school house two years, it presents very fond memories. Mrs. Sweet even played 'eenie-inie-over (long 'i' as in eye-nie) with us.
Best wishes.

Thank you. In the fifties, we spent the first eight grades in the country school and received a diploma of sorts. I still have my diploma for completing eight grades. Hugs

What a lovely story and photograph of you and Ken. I so enjoyed this true story. I remember that song as a former Sunday School teacher. Sending you my best today as always and best wishes for the upcoming contest,
Sally :))
