It's all just practice.
One of the problems with the site is that folk are in such a rush to post things, especially if they're 'playing the game'. Most of it isn't ready which is a shame when some of it could be so awesome but it's been rushed. G

After having read your 'show don't tell' segments, I have been searching for words to describe a 'drum roll on a tabletop' without writing it. I haven't figured out the correct words, yet, but have plenty of time. LOL

finger drummed on the table is the quickest way, I would suggest. drummed most folk would recognise. G

I've found it was always there, but the ability to sew it together gets better, I think one has to be born with it, from experience. I think you're spot on with your observations about imagery. i see things in my head, but used to struggle with getting it down on the page. We write long-winded, use lots of adjectives and adverbs at first but then as experience takes over, you strip it back with robust descriptors (usually just one) or better verb.
You always need the needle and thread, but the arts in the stitch.
