The umbrella protects us from many things; one of them is rainy days. If we are at a ballgame and the rain starts falling what do we do? Reach for our umbrella if we have one. It is a comfort when you have an umbrella.

When we are loved, every storm we face feels like a drizzle. Your senryu expresses this well. Facing life alone is truly hard. That is why we need to appreciate all the loved one's in our life and reciprocate.

This is nicely put - love does indeed provide a shield to deflect harmful words, just like an umbrella protects against storms (as long as it doesn't get too windy, haha).
