I thoroughly enjoyed reading your enjoyable story. Yes, in life, most all of us have someone who has made a big difference in the person we have become. And it's always a pleasure to read or see when they get the praise they deserve. Thanks for sharing and good luck in the contest!

Of course, an autobiography is expected to be true, false or literary autobiography is sometimes sold more but read least; your life story is so flexible, changeable, diversified, beginning with defence (not seriously), but your Navy chief's effect you recognised well; Well said, well done, post god speed more; b a classic-good (rare) theist writer, post 4 God; may pray FS sick Free Member Alcreator Litt Dear (DR)

This is a very well written and very interesting condensed autobiography. Are you still that tall or taller? I could see him wanting you to play basketball. Great write my friend! Blessings, Teri

I don't read many Navy related stories, but this one is a gem. Are you per any chance familiar with the concept of a Bildungsroman? (a German term, a novel, whose protagonist learns and makes great progress in his life) This could be a great synopsis for a novel from this genre.

I'm not familiar with Bildungsroman but search for what it is and understand. Yes, that could be many a young man, and I suspect woman. Perhaps I can find Joyce's Artist of a Young Man.

A good idea :) Have a great weekend

Wow, Tom. What a story. You have written your life story so well, even for one who doesn't follow basketball. Your story plays tribute to one who turned your life around and gave you self belief, the greatest gift of all. With that you have achieved a successful and meaningful life. Well written story.

I wonder if there is another story, fictional, where the lad who would be king, failed and was never lifted from earlier attacks? Where would he have ended today?
-
His inner worth would have still been the same. One's value does not depend on what one achieves or does in this life, except in the eyes of other people for whom what one "does" is all that counts. To me a person is valued because of who they are inside. This second person you mention may not "succeed" in earthly terms, but if they are still a good person within, with integrity and compassion, they are of great value.

Anybody's dream life story Tom.
Your attractive writing style captures one's imagination.
And your story leaves one's mouth drooping with envy. And unsolicited Dmiration.
Yes, I know you only did what comes naturally, and under orders.
I on the other hand was continually court marshalled.
Hated following orders. :-))Z.

I understand, as Charly Harper would say. (2.5 men)

Yes, I "knew" this was autobiographical, but I had to wait until the end before confirmation.
You really gave it everything you had, Tom, didd'nya? The armed forces put a lot of stock in their representing sports teams don't they? It's the same in Oz. I recall my eldest brother being promoted to sergeant not long before he was put on the Army cricket team, only to be demoted once the tour was over. ( they lost)
Captain White became an admiral after you and your team won. Good on him. cheers Cass

Oz??? Where the Wizard Waz??? There was a time when sports were king in the armed forces. That was long ago, An admiral Zumwalt, beached funding in the seventies and that piece of history went away, save for a few elite athletes.

This is a great true story. I have one similar, but I was fortunate enough to meet up with my "coach" at a reunion and tell him how he had influenced me. Very nice job. You should have entered this in a contest.

Your story is my own, sometimes all you need it's a kind heart to look past your weakness and bring that hidden gem that God left into your heart, to the surface. Thank you for sharing and good luck with your writings.

Very well written. Good work.
Having someone take interest and mentor, or coach, a young person is often the difference between success and dismal failure. I'm glad that it worked out.
Best wishes.

Makes me wonder where I would have ended without being drafted for an intramural team, with zero experience. It was a long road that despite the aches of senioritis, would do it again.
