Alright this needed its twenty-fifth review. I did laugh out loud because I was laughing at myself. We have all done this. Pumped tons of site dollars into pieces that we 'strongly feel' are worthy of the winning circle and some type of acknowledgement.

After mall, that is what the virtual ribbons really represent is it not? Others found your work worthy.

I may deserve a ribbon for being the most pathetic. The pieces I really like the most and pump up for reviews, quite often do not meet the 'ribbon level' of acknowledgement from my contemporaries, nor even garner a shiner six star. Ha! Jokes on me. The life of a writer!

Appreciate you G. You are an honest reviewer without being an ass.

Have a great day.

This story made me smile and hurt my head all at the same time lol. I hated mathematics at school and use a calculator now lol. Thank you for sharing and have a great week.

I love it, G! You've done a perfect commentary on the frustrations that we writers on FanStory go through everyday, yet we continue to post and review for hours just to keep on doing it. Obviously the website can't operate for nothing. lol

This was absolutely great, G. It was in essence a whole lot of to do about nothing. Oh, I do realize that writing is a big thing with writers but as Jean and John commented in the last four line, it really was about nothing. Very well done and greatly enjoyed.

LOL, you do offer up a sad truth about the contests. I do admit I have been an offender. It is easy to get caught up in the chase, especially for a new member. Now that I have been on-site for a few months I am much more disciplined...okay maybe not. Do you know of a good 12-step program? Excellent work. Terry.

There's no help for some people, Terry... lol

We all put too much stock in this thing sometimes and get caught up in the 'game'. I was the same when I first started before I realised I was just buying things. It was crazy. Generally I post about 80 - 90 posts a year. The year I finished second in short stories the winner posted more than three times what I'd posted.

There's all different ways to navigate this site. We all want to be read but I refuse to pay out big sums for it. It used to be a $1 payout was a big amount not it's way more than that.

The amount of reviews are nice but when you look at them, the vast majority are fluff and we're just kidding ourselves. Don't believe in your own press. that's my advise. When folk read your work for nothing or a low payout, that's more realistic and real.

    All the best
    G

I did enjoy this. It mirrors my thoughts exactly. Yes, it would be easy to buy one's way into ATB. Which is why I never pay real money, and never promote my stuff to page 1. If reviewers like my work they will happily review for between 42 and 72 cents. I have had others push my work to Page 1 and I was a bit embarrassed. So I review a lot to earn "money", but I include those starting out as well as those who I am just trying to support. I enter contests if I find them interesting or if I have something to say - but it usually costs more than I get back when it's all said and done. But I write if and when I want to, and when I do, I love the whole process! It's all a bit crazy, and at times a bit frustrating. But I guess we all chose to join.

Spot on Wendy. It's a good attitude to have. I frequently read for 2 cents. There are some awesome writers on here who never get read sadly. Many leave before they figure out how things work, too. G

Hah. It's a writer's site...it's a business.

No writer is going to get wealthy, for sure
the "House" always wins!

Guilty as charged. I post rarely because I will not spend real money to buy "Member Dollars."

I review a LOT...and when I have enough to promote a post I post it up, up up...

Also? I am amazed at the folks who don't realize they can promote other writers work.

I do it frequently, and it brings me much joy!

I also get a kick out of looking for poems on the cusp of "Recognized" or "All Time Best"--

If one more review will put them over I'm happy to do it for 2 cents!

I learn so much from the excellent writers...and I hope I encourage and help out those just starting out.

There was a writer not too long ago who posted stories. Rough around the edges...

(And that's coming from me, who rarely dares to write prose!)

I noticed this Newbie was getting three and four stars... An occasional snarky two.

Okay. Some don't default to five-- a lot do!

I PM'd her with some suggestions....

She PM'd me back that she thought she had some talent but was convinced she was wrong.

Kind of too bad. Since she was thirteen.

She quit a week later.

That still bothers me.

I say no harm, no foul, any of us promoting, as long as we don't believe our "press."

Everyone here can get as many ATB's as member dollars will buy. That's baked into the cake.

Without promoting not many would get ATB's on quality or their fan base alone...

The things that keep me here are relationships built, welcoming Newbies, surprising someone with a Lucky Lep....or a jump from third page to first...

If it ever felt like a chore to come on and review, I'd leave.

Sure, we all get the big picture...
Some love it here for the contests!
Some are inspired to post twice a day, without fail!

Whatever floats their boat...

I've been hanging around since 2007.
I haven't entered a contest in over six months...

I will again, I'm sure.

All in all I find 99% of folks to be courteous in their reviews and replies to reviews.

More smiles than frowns, for sure!

I never was good at math.

I'm partial to writers though!

And this write must have every reader nodding!

Karenina

There are many ways to navigate the site and as long as it's fun, it's all good. I do worry though that folk seem to take it very seriously and get easily offended. lol G

Yes, I wrote somethings similar to this. A poem called 'Fun with words' and a story, For the Win, both back in April. I hope sanity returns.

notes:

Argh!" John Harris dug the heels of hand into his temples, scrunching his eyes tight.

It's not the first time I've written about this either. It's particularly bad at the minute. I remember when a $1 pay-out was big money. All the best G. Thanks for that catch, too.

You are absolutely right. Writers! I got a kick out of your story and your "simple mathematics." Thanks for sharing this here, and best wishes to you.

The rankings is a game, a fun one, but it can be bought. Same as ATB. Folk try it with competitions as well. We all want to be read but paying folk to do it to the current extent is barmy. lol Many thanks G

One thing I love about your story is all the allusions to the world we move in (This FS world). The sense of humour as well.
I paid attention and there is a lot of showing instead of telling. Because of the dialogues and the glasses round Jean's neck, I can imagine they're a middle-aged couple.
Just a couple of things and it might just be me:
- Isn't there something missing here: John Harris dug the heels of hand (his hand/s)?
- This is an obsession of mine, but I wouldn't use the same verb twice in one sentence: Jean set the cup of tea onto a coaster and set the biscuits beside it. (maybe put the biscuits?)
- You forgot the capital j here: John glared at jean for a brief moment before they both burst out in a fit of giggles.
As usual it's a pleasure to read you.
