JLR! I don't usually like or read poetry or stories about war, however, as graphic as this poem is, I was not appalled by it. As a matter of fact I enjoyed it from beginning to end. Well Done!

Christine, thank you so much for taking a risk with this. As a veteran and a history buff, I was reflecting on the similarity of Ukraine and WW1. That was the last time that horses were on the battlefield were often hand-to hand conflicts. The ugliness of mans humanity to man never ends as I pray daily for 1000 years of worldwide Peace.

I haven't any clue what I would do with such a challenge. I thought it difficult to read what the piece was until JRL nailed the sucker. Very well written. Did the first and second stanzas have to rhyme with one another or did you decide that on your own.

This universal and sad theme is one appropriate for all the stages of history, where men and women have been asked to fight, or have volunteered to fight, for their country's freedom or honour, and for soldiers of all nations. You have honoured them all. Well expressed.

Very restrictive poetry form... and yet you manage to say a lot without awkwardness or lack of rhyme or rhythm. Your subject matter is one for the ages. Sad, beautiful, heroic, triumphant. Great poem!

Thank you from a female veteran and retiree of 20 years. We do not all wear berets or berets of gold, but we all do what we are told. I served in Egypt and Germany as well as at home. I never lost blood, but I had to be hospitalized because of a heat stroke. To this day, I cannot tolerate high temperatures. Service life is rough, whether in battle or not if you stay in long enough. Best wishes.

My husband of 43 years, also served in Viet Nam. He died 5 years ago, from Agent Orange-related heart disease.

My sincerest condolences, I have survived two open-heart bypass surgeries also related to the chemical dioxin used in Agent Orange.

You have done very well to survive two bypasses. Writing must be a great outlet for you.
Incidentally, my husband and I had the same Army Medical Corps MOS: 91G (Social Work/Psychology specialist).
He worked as a DETOX specialist in Viet Nam.
It is nice to "talk" to another vet. Take care.

You definitely evoked a sense of warfare, especially pre-20th century. The switch from positive to negative is also evocative of war. In boot, we were told that we would be boys until we became men. In this piece you illustrated that transition.
