Seeing I have written lots about your beloved wife and how she makes you happy and puts a smile on your face, I was surprise to read that you are becoming like your dour, serious father.
I had a difficult relationship with my father too. He was sent to the seminary in Como, Italy when he was 13 years old ( from 1942 to 1948 ) and he had a mental break down at 19 ,so he never became a priest but you can imagine what 6 years of religious doctrine can do to a person.
When they were sent home for 2 weeks for Christman their hair was shaved off completely. They were allowed a shower only once a year , in the morning they had a basin with cold water which in winter frozen on top.
Besides Latin and Greek they were taught that women were tools of the devil.
I have a couple of pic of his teachers and the seminarians, scary stuff. Like the Addams Family vibe.
I passed my whole life in boarding schools and when I was home in the Summer holidays my father would time how long I took to go to the shops on my bike to buy the bread ..He was a freak control.

Hello Jake, Retired Diplomat, as we grow older, we understand our parents more. Life forces us to do so. Your father came from difficult times--like my own dad. Life was not easy. Survival was everything, and so, much joy was missing. However, your father helped to shape the Man you became. Thank goodness you have your mother's sense of humor. We all need to smile a little more. Look at the World we live in today. Perhaps, the parents of today, need to reflect upon the parenting of yesteryear. So many young people are just out of control. There is a lot to be said for control of emotions and discipline.

Wow! Your father made you arise at dawn to chores on the weekend. Your words capture who your father was yet you find yourself becoming more like him. I am sure many can relate to your words.

You show a keen awareness of your father's dour attributes. If you can maintain the best parts of your parents then you're doing okay. Sounds like your mother needed every bit of sense of humour in her marriage. Your childhood sounded like slavery with all the chores, rather than loving family enjoyment.

yeah my family was almost a poster child definition of a dysfunctional family.
