I understand the viewpoint. I get that folk in the US seem to believe they have this right to carry firearms. But why? It's a bit ridiculous. I live in a country where I grew up under terrorism and paramilitary organisations. We had much less crime associated with firearms proportionally.

While some ideas might sound plausible, most of it is political stupidity. Nothing will stop an individual determined to harm himself or others. - I think this misses the point a little. Whilst the latter may be true, it's a hell of a lot more difficult to kill 30 people with a knife...

why they were made available to the general public in the first place. They are weapons of war. - ALL guns are weapons of war. Guns have NO other purpose other than to maim or kill.

It wouldn't solve the problem anyway. The black market would happily sell guns at an exorbitant price to anyone who desired one. - well, this in itself would make it more difficult to obtain one. Pricing a lot of folk out of the market and you'd need to know where to find them.

However, we are wrong to blame guns. A gun is an inanimate object, the same as a car. In 2021, approximately 42,915 people died in automobile accidents. Did you hear anyone say we should ban cars? No? So why should guns be different?- this is an easy one to answer - a gun has NO OTHER PURPOSE than to maim or kill... it is that simple.

It's a well-written piece but these kind of things are also flawed. The car argument is especially so. It's the purpose you have to look at. Yep, cars can kill people, so can jigsaw pieces. Better still, look at kinder eggs - they're banned in the US despite only having a handful of GLOBAL deaths attributed to them - but not guns.

A lot of inanimate objects are banned - food for example. drugs are inanimate objects.

You might also want to check out the requirements for this competition again. There is a required end line which you haven't used.

As a foreigner I have a lot of expat friends from around the world who, whenever we hear of another shooting in America, shake our heads in disbelief.
I thought your article was well written but lacked some focus. There are several points raised and you could have pulled these together into a conclusion that would have made the piece more thoughtful and powerful. For example you ask why people want assault weapon's, how there is a large black market for guns, that people would hide them rather than give them up, how gun licensing wont prevent crime in America, if someone is determined to harm someone they will, the evil the fear. There are all good topics, but you could say why these are issues more in America? There must be something special about the America that makes owning a gun so desirable and using it (being willing to use it) on someone more likely. As you say guns don't kill people, people do. Why American people do it more frequently would be a great insight. As you have some guns don't want to give them up it would make an authoritive answer for something incomprehensible to non Americans

Thank you for your thoughtful remarks. I find it interesting that so many other countries don't have this problem on such a large scale. I don't know why it is so bad here in the states. I appreciate all these comments from different areas. Hugs.

I disagree with most of your conclusions. I agree with you about assault weapons. I think banning them would help plus universal background checks, red flag laws, licensing gun ownership, and buyback programs. I would also ban handguns since they are most often the weapon of choice.

Thank you. I disagree with you on your theory about handguns. It might be true when just and idividual is shot, but mass murderers need a repeating weapon of some kind. Thanks for the opinion. Hugs

Good points about banning semiautomatic weapons with high-capacity magazines. You
are right about reactions if the government interferes. Nice bit of humor with the comparison to car accidents. I know some people live in bad neighborhoods and do like the security of having a gun close by.

Thank you. Yep, I live in the country, but we have a lot of bad characters in this area. Also, there is a lot of theft around here. Therefore, the loaded shotgan and noisy watchdog. Hugs

Your article is interesting and well written. You have a valid opinion, which is your right. I, for one, believe it is people that do the damage, but if we should not make guns available to those who use to destroy human life. Evi

Thank you. If they make guns hard to purchase the shooters will find them elsewhere. It's not hard to find a gun if you want it. Hugs.

You wrote an excellent article. You gave good evidence to back your story. I think too much is concern on amending the 2nd Amendment, but more should focus on security for our children and bringing down the hammer on breaking the laws with a harsher penalty. Good luck in the contest

Thank you. It's a difficult problem to solve. I feel so sorry for all the lives of innocent people lost to shootings every day. Hugs.

I am not a gun owner, but I do understand why people want to maintain their rights to own them. I think it's ridiculous that people defend the right to own assault weapons. They never should have entered society. One doesn't need to use them for hunting and it's way too dangerous to keep in the homes for self-protection.

You did a wonderful job with this essay. You grabbed my attention from the start and held it throughout. I also grew up in the 50's and did so much on my own without any fears. The reality now is that any one of us can be gunned down at any time. It's so depressing. Regards, Lilly

Thank you and thanks for the six stars. As a fifties baby you can see how things have changed too. I wish we could go back to those simple times, don't you? Hugs.

I recently read that there are more guns than people in this country. I believe that alone is a National shame. But as my husband says, "The cat's already out of the bag."

Your rant stays away from being emotional and sticks with opinions based on facts and experience. Well written and presented. Good luck with this contest.

Thank you. Your husband hit the nail on the head with his comment, "The cat's already out of the bag." There are so many guns out there that regulating sales won't do a thing to stop shooters. Hugs

I think it's sad that anyone would feel the need to own a gun. Guns might not be killers, but that is what they are made for, why have them if that's not the intention. If all guns were banned, the next generation would have a chance to live their lives. Here in the UK only some police and all army are allowed them. This is a subject that will never go away. It was a really good rant. Well done. :)) Sandra xx

Thank you. I find these comments from other parts of the world so interesting. I don't hunt but I do keep a gun for protection. In this country we need it. but you are right, if the general public didn't have guns I wouldn't need to keep one for protection. Hugs

I think if a person not thinking clear in his mind firearms will be a danger to us all. I think that the damage is already done and we can't do anything about it. This is a scary fact. There should be gun control. Excellent work!

Thank you. Do you think there is any way to control guns? I don't. If a person wants to kill with a gun he will find one somehow. Hugs
reply by Raul1 on 22-Jun-2022
There is a way but it is risky. I agree with you that someone else will find another one. Let's just pray and hope that it will be solved, but yes gun control is the way.
