I agree with your post. Our world see,s to have taken a sharp turn away from esteeming life. If someone has wickedness in their heart they will find a way to kill.

Removing guns will turn us into a country run by criminals who get their hands on guns any way they can. Our country has become lawless and the leaders, corrupt. Most have police protection, armed guards and heavily guarded homes, and dare to make speeches of the evils therein. You and I are the ones that stand the risk and every child deserves to be able to go to school protected. Chicago is one of the worst cities with shooting deaths weekly, yet, the strict guns laws don't help them. It never stops.

Sending you my best today as always and best wishes for the upcoming contest,
Sally :))

Thank you. I live near Grand Rapids, Michigan and there are one or more shootings there every week. The world has become a scary place. Hugs

I'm loving these rants. It's time people spoke up and spoke out on these things!

I grew up in the fifties as well--and enjoyed the freedom from fear that my grandchildren face every day in school they go through countless drills of "sheltering in place" and attend assemblies to learn what "an active shooter" is.

I believe in the Second Amendment. Like you, I am befuddled and dismayed to hear folks arguing they MUST have the ability to own semi-automatic weapons and high-capacity magazines.

For what? Two of the children slaughtered in Uvalde were decapitated.
Beheaded by the force and violence of that weapon.

Machine guns have been banned, as upheld by the Supreme Court, since 1986. Makes sense to me. Why not these high-capacity weapons of war?

I'd take issue with your argument that:

" Most mass shooters acquired guns by theft, on the black market, or from acquaintances. "

The NIJ has researched this and, I quote from them:

"National Institute of Justice (NIJ), which found that, from 1966 to 2019, 77 percent of mass shooters obtained the weapons they used in their crimes through legal purchases."

Indeed, the Uvalde shooter purchased his weapons--

According to the Texas Tribune:

"He legally purchased two AR platform rifles from a federally licensed gun store on two days: May 17 -- just a day after his birthday -- and May 20, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives said, according to a briefing that state Sen. John Whitmire, chair of the Senate Criminal Justice Committee, received from state authorities late Tuesday. The gunman bought 375 rounds of 5.56-caliber ammunition on May 18."

He could not have bought a handgun until age 21 under Federal law...or purchased a beer in Texas. Yet he could slip through that loophole and purchase two AR long guns and enough ammo to take out small children in even greater numbers than he managed to.

This is insanity.

Of course, guns should not be banned. Of course, people will hoard their weapons. All of this is true.

Does this mean something cannot be done to curb these continuing senseless acts of mass violence?

Politics aside. To do nothing is to welcome further destruction.

Good rant!

Many in my family own rifles. They hunt. They should be able to keep them. Not one of them thinks a semi-automatic is necessary for this activity.

Because it is not.

Thank you. Yep, I guess you are right too. Anyone over 18 can purchase a gun. Raising the age to 21 won't make a lot of difference in shootings. If a teenager wants a gun he will find a way to get it. It makes me angry, but what can we do? Hugs.

What isn't worth trying, to save the lives of our family innocent children?

An interesting article. It is written with plain language. The images are clear. The pace is good. The conclusions are as with any current issue debatable. That is why they are current issues. The arguments are the same I have heard many times, but well presented.

Thanks for a understandable read.

Thank you. Yes, my remarks are debatable but I did check everything out that I wrote about. Everyone has a right to their opinion. Hugs

I agree with your rant in every way, and you have organized it in a logical way to press the points home. I don't, however, have a gun out as I have great grandchildren running around the place. I think we should do like the French. As I understand they never name the killers. Let's take away their 15 minutes of fame and their desire to get their face known.

Thank you. That's a good idea. If the killer is never named he loses his moment of notoriety. I live with my niece and we both have guns. We live out in the country and there are some unsavory characters around here. Hugs

I am a Christian man who abides by my Bible training, which teaches me that we are nearing the very end of this Satanic dominated system of things. Knowing that his time is limited, the Devil is doing all that he can to destroy as many of Gods creation as he can. What that means to us is the witnessing all sorts of depraved actions by people who have virtually relinquished control of their lives over to evil. God help us all.

Thank you. Something sure has gone haywire in the world today. I grew up in the fifties and it was a delightful life. We walked to school and roamed freely around the countryside. No one ever bothered us. I don't remember hearing much about violence or shootings. Hugs

Well-written essay. I totally agree with this statement. I am, however, in total agreement with the banning of assault gun sales and semiautomatic weapons with high-capacity magazines. Why does a person need an assault weapon anyway? They for sure aren't used to kill critters for eating. The critter will be torn to bits and there wouldn't be much left to eat.
I like that your font was bold, but it could be a bit larger. There are numerous older writers on this site, and I bet it would be appreciated. I think a photo of a gun would perhaps be a better visual. I don't get the one you are now using except it is red like blood.

You wrote your rant very well - but I think it is very sad that your country has come to this. Thirty thousand deaths a year is an unbelievable statistic. We in Australia took immediate and strict action with our (one and only) massacre twenty-six years ago, and now we live for the most part in perfect freedom, without guns. Most people do not own a gun, have never even seen one, apart from on police uniforms. (Criminals still get and use them but mostly in gang wars.) I cannot imagine living elsewhere. Best wishes for your rant in the contest.

Thank you. Maybe I should come and live in your country. It sounds much nicer. I checked all of my neighbors and asked some strangers, and found each one had at least one gun. I know a couple of guys who have permits to carry and go everywhere with a pistol on their belts. One is only 23 and a hothead so how did he get a permit to carry a pistol? This country is a scary mess and I don't know how they intend to change things, or if anyone can. Hugs

This is a tremendously successful write!
I am in agreement on every point raised. I too do not see an end in site unfortunately. I struggle daily not to feel heavy hearted for those who have suffered at the hands of gun violence.
The thought that my two nieces, both under 11, will never know a time WITHOUT mass shootings or drills to hide from school shooters. That fact alone keeps me up at night. Thanks for sharing this crucial information with all of us.

Thank you. Yes, it is so sad that many innocent people lose their lives in such a stupid manner. Those poor children had their future stolen from them. I'm glad to be on the end of life instead of just starting out. It's scary. Hugs.

You made several valid points, Mystery Author. Your rant
was well organized with smooth flow and great details to
support everything you said. You are right about politicians
only acting so concerned until it quiets down. Also, I agree,
anyone will get a gun if they so desire, then . . .

Best wishes in the contest, Jan
