So often war seems to spring from political desires rather than any necessity for keeping the people safe. War has never made a lot of sense to me because there should be other ways of countries settling their differences. War is expensive in terms of money as well as loss of life. Most of the time the aggressor suffers losses as well as the target of the aggression. I think you have made you statement well in this poem.

Thanks Beth, and it seems we are both on the same page with our views. But one that I think maybe an exception is WWll. Hitler needed to be stopped along with Japan and others who threatened our freedom. Thank you again my friend for your very kind review and words.

You did an excellent job with writing a statement you feel strongly about. I feel as you do. I lost a cousin in that was and he left a wife and 4 children whose lives were destroyed too.

Thanks for sharing
Blessings
Janet

Oh Janet, it gives me the chills to hear what you just said about your cousin. It just was so evil since that war was about the president at that time that owned numerous helicopter factories and he just kept getting richer as our boys at that time were killed. Among the guy I had been dating, we lost relatives and good friends and it has been hard to let it go, but I have. Thanks my friend as I appreciate your very kind review and words.

Author,
Your exceptional poem asks crucial questions (though hauntingly unanswered) at the end of each stanza.
What a horrible, useless war that stole the innocence and youth of young American men.
Your poem is great (I am sorry I don't have 6 stars to give your memorable poem).
Exceptional work.
Good luck!
Blessings,
Cindy

I think one might be an exception is WWll. Hitler needed to be stopped along with Japan and others who threatened our freedom. But Vietnam was about the president at that time who owned numerous helicopter factories and everyday was getting richer as they slaughtered our young men. I am thankful that my faith has now allowed me to let go of it. Thank you again my friend for your very kind review and words.

This war tore our nation apart - we fought it in both Vietnam and here in the States. Why was it fought? Same reason they all are - power, greed, there's money to be made . . .

That you wrote about it all these years later says that it still bothers you. I'm glad you shared your feelings in this statement poem.

I have asked myself he same question many times. I remember the hatred
shown to us who, with God's mercy, came home. People are just now
showing gratitude for our servi0ce. By the way, we had the war won when we pulled out. Thank you for this poem.

Vietnam was a rough one here as our president got rich from using helicopters from his many factories while he got richer everyday they were there. Truly bad! Thanks for your lovely review and comments my friend!

I gather this poem refers to the war in Vietnam. I remember it well. My name was in the barrel for call up. Fortunate favored me.
I love the style of this poem and I still thank the Lord for my good fortune.

No doubt that the narrator has strong feelings about this senseless war since it took away her boyfriend. Powerful lines about the draft, the politicians and protestors. This brought back painful memories.

I am so sorry this brought back such painful memories. You too must have lost somebody very special to you. I am sorry! Yet we never want to forget them or how they were treated when they came home. All wars are hard, but this one seemed harder for me because our president back then owned many helicopter factories and got richer every day our boys were being blown to pieces. All so his pocketbook could grow!
Thank you my dear friend for your very kind review and comments! I truly appreciate it.

Hello author, when it comes to war, there are no winners. During the Viet Nam war, our young men were drafted. Some survived, some were captured and tortured, and other were killed--many were blown up into pieces from land mines, and many came back addicted to drugs and messed up in the head. I came from a poor neighborhood, so all our young men went to war--no college exemption. Upon return, our Servicemen received little thanks, little respect, but lots of spit. I can understand how seeing the Memorial Wall can be upsetting to some. I know when my Mother was handed a folded flag from a most grateful Nation, I only felt anger.

A poem of high and low emotions. As this is a contest entry, I wish you good luck.

Margaret my friend, I am sorry that this is a hard subject for you too!
I knew that it would be for many, as it truly is for me. However we can't forget those who went as commanded by their country. Yet the truth is, our president at that time owned numerous helicopter factories and got richer, every day that our boys were out there being his scapegoats.
Thank you my friend for your very kind and heartfelt words!

Nothing has changed. Instead of War, politicians are well invested in pharmaceutical stocks.

love this anti-war poem about the Vietnam war but could apply to Iraq, Afghanistan and so many other wars that we have fought under dubious circumstances at best Like the last stanza the best.
