Interesting poem. In our family - growing up - we had pretty much the same rule -- just be home before it gets dark. Indeed, for a minute there, it sounded as if you may have lived on my street -- mine was 10 acres surrounded by gravel roads on Rural Route 2! Good poem and I enjoyed the read. Congrats on the win! ann

This shows the freedom and innocense of childhood. We do some crazy things when playing. As long as no laws were broken and only minor injuries happened then mothers didn't care.
When I was small we had a soybean field behind our backyard. We played hide and seek in it. We also had a field at the dead end of our street in which we road our bikes and used little hills as jump ramp. I broke my ankle falling off a bike during one of these jumps.
Congrats on winning the contest.
Keep writing and stay healthy
Joan

    Thank you Joan.
Your childhood sounds like a fun one with lots of outdoor time too.

A well deserved win for this contest. A rough and tumble ride through your boyhood - I felt as though the pace picked up speed until that last line, when the reader is meant to pause and reflect.

Congratulations.

Author,
This is an excellent recount of your unique childhood.
I like the grittiness of your words. My childhood was rough and tumble too, but yours wins over mine. I assume you're from Alaska or Canada. I like the photo and symbolism of the wolf.
Excellent.
Good luck!
Blessings,
Cindy

I loved your reminiscing.
You had one hell of a childhood , living in the countryside , being free.
Being one with nature. So much adventure.

You had to be back by dinner ?? I would have signed up for that , hands down.

I was a tomboy but I was trapped in boarding school , just rules and regulations. We were not allowed even to have a bike to share.

I was a pain in the butt and felt the strap and stick already at age 6 ( those nuns/ crows were all but loving creatures) and even got expelled at 9 .

I wished I had had the opportunity to grown up in a family.

Today most kids pass their free time in front of a computer or on their phones they have no idea what they are missing.

Hi, yes I had a fun time as a kid in Alberta. We lived out in the country on 2.5 acres, had motorbikes to rip around on, bmx bikes, it was fun.
Sounds like Boarding school wasn't a happy place for you. Why were your parents unable to have you at home?

Expelled at 9 you naughty girl. What did you do to deserve that?

Yeah so many kids nowadays are glued to their video games and don't even notice the nature around them. Too bad :(
