You have written an interesting story about you two great great grandfathers. It is unusual that both being Southerners they were near each other in the war but on difference sides. I had many ancestors in that war but as far as I know they all fought in the Southern side.

This fight still leaves a stain in the memories of many who can remember their Grandfather's stories, but progress has proved to be a good thing and we cannot enslave any human as we all have the right to live in a free society. I enjoyed your story here Terry, a fine post, love Dolly x

I've heard stories about ancestors who found themselves on separate sides of the Civil War... It must be enlightening to discover these facts through genealogical research! It seems these days that families are torn apart by differing political opinions-- there are "uncivil" wars taking place at many a family gathering! I prefer enemies becoming family to families becoming enemies! Best of luck in the contest!

I thought it was a terrific essay that illustrated how complicated the war was, a very different view than that of the politically correct view espoused by so many today. I thought it was concise, well laid out, informative, obviously well researched, and it throws light on the experiences of several overlooked individuals. Some of this should be taught in the schools estory

As a fan of anything historical (fiction or fact) I greatly enjoyed this piece. Fascinating how close some people in our history must have been, and we will never know if they met or not. Lovely writing as well, quite an easy, interesting read.

You really did your research and mapped out the genealogy to find this interesting connection. I wonder how many more had ancestors who fought on both sides. It was a tragic war but it's good that we have one united country (well, geographically, not politically or socially). Thanks for sharing! Best wishes in the contest!
