Yes, I can relate - I've been on FS for about 21 months, and face the same issues, with an added complication that my spelling is not recognised as being legitimate because it is Australian! I'm stubborn, won't be changing my Aussie spelling. Lol.

Hi, Terry, join the club! There are so many here on FS who are addicted and I admit I am one of them. Yet I take breaks from it every day and often walk away when my eyes water and I know I have had enough.
You do change tenses sometimes but I am guilty of the same thing.
This is something we all need to consider I guess when we place our money on the post.
When you ask where is the coffee I suppose I need to fix you a cup.
Thanks for bringing to light a subject to consider by all.

Hi Terry,
yeah, me too... addicted to FS, that is. Hmmmm 'that'? It's that dreaded word again, I did it again. Can't help myself.
I find the members dollar bonus reviewing reward much like playing the pokies(poker machines)... and I don't even play the darn things, but once I receive a couple, I'm in there trying for more. What's that about? Just another addiction FS throws in to make one think you're on a good thing.

Ah yes, a review you say?
Once again Terry you have entertained with ease, writing about the journey of, and into the writing world of FS, and of course all those who have helped you gain and hone your skills... which BTW seems to be working out pretty well for you.

But if I remember one thing you've said, it's that you're a good listener, and I'd add learner to the list as well.

Unfortunately, I have a way to go with my grammar, punctuation and such. I came in cold to writing anything when I started here, but the community of FS is a charitable lot and help to smooth the way... hmmmm, maybe not the critiques and reviews?

Anyway Terry, as I said, once again reading your post has entertained me with a sense of connection through a good write, so thank you for that!

With our thoughts we create...
smooth connections.

Kind regards,
James.

Hi Terry, the coffee is at my house. The pot is always on. T, this is a wonderful story. I love how you remembered all the members that have helped you along the way. Of special note:

RG Star gave me some good advice on how to rewrite and edit by walking away and coming back the following day.

(That's what I do, but there's still a lot that I have to learn.)

A fun story. And yes, you're addicted to FS, but I think that you can skip the 12-step program. Enjoy. FS is a good addiction.

Great write!!
This post had me giggling the whole way through.
Your journey on this site is similar to mine.
I joined 5 months ago wanting to enter a poetry contest, I am also not a poet and I won third place in the
" How did you meet your husband/wife/
significant other contest.
I am slightly addicted to writing reviews.
I enjoy reading all sorts of posts and I know everyone appreciates reviews,
(the good/bad/ugly)
I also like to encourage the writers with the first post.
I like to give them a big welcome.
Not only is it fulfilling but I do a fair amount of promo when I post my work so money earned is helpful.
I love that you outlined who gave what advice. Very helpful if I need to reach out for similar concerns.
Thanks for sharing.

This is clever, witty and a nice job in recognition of those who have helped you along the way.
Um, I never thought I had a FS addiction until you brought it up. Now I will have to join a meeting.
Best wishes
Mary

Mary, LOL, thank you for the six stars!!! I guess we will have to find a meeting. Do you think we might be able to drink wine instead of coffee? Terry.

I would take wine over coffee anyday!

Absolutely stellar!!!!! I love it, Terry, and you have become a writer I would want to read even if I didn't know you. It's just good writing. The humor is always there. The facts are not outshined by the fiction. The characters always live -- even if the writer is the character -- in the reader's mind. It's just excellent and I'm so pleased to read it and to discuss it. ann

You made several excellent points, Terry. Overall, I
enjoyed reading your informative post. I agree about
FS being addictive, and I know most control their time.
What a great tribute to some of your fellow authors. The
picture of the kitty was great. To me, s/he is saying, "Get
off that computer and pay attention to me or . . . "
Thanks for sharing, Jan

This is a very familiar journey! It's what I had when I first joined in 2008 and got my ego simultaneously stroked and rough-handed. I've come to a few of my own personal 'rules' such as only give lower than a 5 if it's worth spending an hours suggesting edits one. And if some bellend gets offended that I spent an hour or more trying to help them, well, that's what the Skip button is for in future. Never pay real money for promotion - that's my other one, alongside always putting at least a Treasure Chest on every post. If I have to earn $10 to post a poem or story, it both gives me time to think about it and forces me to meet more writers.

Third rule is, if going for more than the basic Treasure Chest, shoot for the front page - otherwise, it's a waste of promotion. I reckon you share that sentiment though :-).

This was a very enjoyable read - and I'm afraid I have not spags to note or suggestions to make!

The coffee's over there by the cookies. Wow, you do share the gratitude. Lots of people appreciate being acknowledged. I certainly do. Thank you.

One suggestion I've been thinking of mentioning to you, but it smacked a little of self-serving, so I kept putting it off. Now's a good time. It's a minor adjustment, but I've found over the years I've been here that it adds readers to your individual posts. It's this: Always add the Leprechaun certificate. It costs the same as one pump ... so, close to three bucks, but it has those words after the payout amount of "and possibly more". I look for them when I read a post. I'll read one without it, if I know I'll get some value added, but it's almost a no brainer if a post has one. The best "reward" I ever got from a post had the leprechaun but the 50 % chance had run out. So, when I pushed send, after my review, I was amazed to see two membership pumps, one Leprechaun cert, one of the banner advertisements, and 25 extra cents. I have enough gambler in my blood that I love seeing the "and perhaps more" at the end of the payout amount. Try it ... you'll see.

I am not out of money yet, but the FS staff is planning a vacation to Hawaii. [What!]

A wry and witty post, Terry, but you do have a way of putting a spin on a subject that gives it a fresh approach.

Jay
