My mother was a teacher, so I can relate. She skipped grades and graduated high school at age thirteen, and Teachers Normal School at age sixteen, qualified to teach Kindergarten through eighth grade -- all subjects except gym, music, and foreign languages. She worked as a substitute teacher until retiring at age seventy-eight (and lived to nearly ninety). She prepared her own materials for every class, and some of her students told her they preferred her over their regular teacher because they learned better from her.
Whatever occurs in the contest, you are a winner where it matters.

Your mother sounds wonderful, and I bet she was much loved. Yes, I too prepared most of my own materials, easier to tailor them to students' needs. Many thanks for the exceptional review and six stars. I appreciate that a great deal.

Yes, she was. One year she was subbing for a first grade teacher out on extended maternity leave. The kids loved her, but the principal bothered her by hanging around her classroom door, listening. She asked him to stop, but he didn't; so after a few days she told the kids she was leaving. The kids were so unhappy about it that they complained to their parents. Later that day, a delegation of parents went to the school. They thought the principal had fired her, and demanded she be reinstated. He was so embarrassed that he called her, promised he would not bother her, and begged her to return. She did, and all went well. The kids liked her so much that they told her they didn't want their original teacher to come back. She was in high demand in all the schools in the area.

That is very impressive re your mother. My daughter is a teacher of young children too, and she's like that. The school tends to put the difficult ones with her, and some parents have insisted their children be transferred to her class. She finds it draining, but does a wonderful job with them.
Your mother was certainly a very special lady.

Thank you Barbara! Great review. Yes, my pencils all had names and personalities, just like in real life. I agree about the Grade Two teacher. I still remember her name. She was terrifying.

Out of all the teachers I had, I remember only three, I seemed to be a regular for the cane, although I was "lively"rather than naughty, but there was only one that put my grades on the improve, I went to an academic high school because of him, instead of a technical high, beautifully written Wendy, blessings Roy

Thank you Roy for reviewing. I remember the names of the two I mentioned, one because she was so terrifying, the other because of his Christian witness, but I do remember several others, but word limits were a restriction.

I and my classmates sometimes experienced abuse in our Catholic grade school. A one ons a half inch thick paddle with a hole drilled into it, for extra sting. The bad teachers I did have made the great teachers I had later on in life shine brightly next to the bad ones.
You must've been a great teacher; the world needs more of those.
I just have one point: when you go into the paragraph about grade 5, the "he" you mentioned isn't clarified. Maybe this was intentional.
