I loved this poem, Willie. It read well and smoothly. The content was super interesting. I have to ask, is this a fictional character? or perhaps someone you knew? Curious. Best, JohnC

Purely fictional. These poems pop in my head, mostly from dreams. I lived on a farm and ranch most of my life. I met and became friends with many old story tellers. Thanks, John for the review and stars.

Willie...

Excellent work. I very much enjoyed your tribute to this unknown (or known?) mountain man. Your character development was particularly strong. Not only did I know about him, I felt like I knew him.

Concise theme; laser-like focus; lively pace and excellent flow leading to a clear and satisfying destination; steady rhythm, flawless rhyme and rhyming pattern (aabb). The few liberties you took with the meter were well played; especially the pattern interrupt in your final couplet.

Keep up the great work and thanks for sharing this ode to Calvin Short with us.

Hi Willie,
I enjoyed the story of Calvin Short, the mountain man. It reminded me of that terrific 1972 movie, "Jeremiah Johnson", starring Robert Redford, and Will Geer as "Bear Claw" Chris Lapp.
I especially liked the final two lines, which were almost an epitaph...
"Few people even knew his name,
He entered the world quietly and left the same"
Thanks for sharing! Living in the mountains was no easy life. Mountain men were tough. I'd love to live in a log cabin. Dreamed about it for many years, but never followed through. My everlasting great regret!
Cheers,
Kimbob

So Calvin was a real guy. Cool. It's great that you wrote an Ode to him. I love the artwork and the beautiful font you used. What's the name of the font? The poem was lovely and told a great story.

Your poem was well thought out, Willie. I enjoyed reading
it. I liked the picture you paired with your well-chosen,
meaningful words. The rhymes worked well, too. Your words
painted a picture of this mountain man who worked the land
and was never a 'hero.' However as you wrote, he and others
like him were important in the settling and prospering of the
USA. Great color scheme and font use, too.
Thanks for sharing, Jan

This was a nice Ode to Calvin Short. I haven't heard him before now, however, you're well informed. And it's like I know him now. Well thought out. Clearly written. Excellent work. Great overall presentation.

Happy Apple Dumpling Day

This is a well-told, rhyming poem about a mountain man. The story of his life is clearly stated in chronological order. The text can be easily read. The visual fits perfectly.
I would drop the poem down one notch from the bottom of the visual. The text needs to be bold or a thicker text to fit the ruggedness of the man you described. The text you have selected is a delicate font. Keep sharing! This is a good poem.

I would have liked to give you 6 stars, but have used my weekly allocation. I really liked this and could picture the wild west and the person you wrote about. This flows so well that it was an easy read to follow. Well done.

I love reading about mountain men, but I never heard of Calvin Short. Besides trapping beaver and living with others like him, what made his life noteworthy?

He is fiction. He was like so many others who helped shape our country. Men and women who lived in that time were hard workers, asked for nothing and are very worthy of praise. Thanks, Rod, for the review. Willie
