Hi John, this is a very poignant and stirring story.
I can identify with the older
mother character in her
declining cognitive abilities.
You weave amazing tapestries of stories & poems.
Have an inspiring Sunday

Thank you, Regina, for going back to read this one! It was fun to write but also too real for comfort! Thank you for the six as well, my friend!

What a wonderfully tragic story and so full of emotion. It brings out the feeling of utter doom and gloom for our country. It could happen just the way you wrote it. Great job. Shirley

I like how you started off with things relatable to most of us, then left your characters open for the readers' minds to develop on their own. Then, slid immediately into the catastrophic death and destruction without giving any chance for us to brace ourselves. Great job! Thanks for sharing.

Thank you, Ric. I'm happy you read and enjoyed it. Thank you also for the SIX, my friend. Your interview with Terry was well done. I enjoyed the read. We seem to have similar thoughts on a few of his questions. Loved it!

Thanks, John, for reading Terry's interview and I'm glad you liked it. He did a great job and kept it basic and simple, which would have been my preference. From reading and enjoying your stories, I had sort of figured we had some similarities. :-)

Wow! The ending is a shocker that gut-punches the reader with pain and fear. You move from a poignant scene on the phone to listening to a rap singer to the potential destruction of the world. Man, quite a ride. Well done,

Wow! the end is coming, I really liked the way you described that sinking feeling of being alone before the end of our world, the conversations over the phone were very effective, very well written, best wishes for your contest****kahpot

I think you did a great job preparing us for the apocalyptic ending. Something terrible happened or was about to happen and even though there is personal crisis of the mother with dementia, something much bigger affecting the whole world is happening. It's a possibility we all fear. Best wishes in the contest!

John. What can I say but that you've tapped into my worst nightmare? The genius of your story is in focusing in a micro-way on one person's reaction to the obliteration of our world. In every movie of this doomsday scenario, we seem to be inundated with throngs of people running, lining up on a freeway to nowhere safe...

In the end, if heaven forbid, we humans are arrogant enough to enter codes and press buttons, we'll all be left individually dealing with our own loss.

This became poignant as Johnny longed for his father's voice ~ and called his mother, and we are impacted emotionally by the sudden blessing of her dementia -- for she will not know, will not understand what fate will soon befall.

This line will haunt me:

' "Why hasn't the world stopped," I muttered."'

Because it may. I very well may...

Thank you, Karenina, I realized the same feelings as I wrote this. It started to become surreal as I thought how tangable it all was. Thank you again for a great review, my friend.

I recall reading an account decades ago about the Secret Service instructing Jackie Kennedy she'd have to go to the nuclear "bunkers" as the threat of a nuclear attack was seemingly imminent. She firmly declined. Said she'd go sit on the front lawn of the White House with her children...

Of course, I couldn't find that reference to cite just now--

Still, it was a haunting story when I was a child!

I'm sure it was, and yes, those were turbulent times and we made it through. Let's pray this is simply another point in time.

Wow, this is deep and profound! The narrator telling us the events of this particular day is intriguing and just plain scarey to consider as I read the last paragraph where the narrator on the media channel tells of a missile blasting all of California and parts of Oregon and Nevada too. This is deep thinking, my friend!
I was on the edge of my seat as I read this through and I was engaged and entertained all at once! What a thrill!
Thanks for sharing this you have a wild and vivid imagination and I say bring on more of this!

Thank you, Jesse, for the great review and the Six stars. I felt terrible for our co-writers in those states, but someone had to go, lol. I joke, but with all kidding aside, this piece was surreal to write. Thanks again, Jesse. I'm humbled by your words.

John, this is really well done for this contest, good luck. You set the table for the reader in vivid terms, and I had no idea what was coming. Then it all made sense. Excellent work! Terry.

Hi John, that was an impressive interpretation of the subject matter of the contest, and it was a bleak one as well with a horrendous outcome. It's well written and I wish you the best of luck. Ulla:)))
