Nice surprise. Many of the upper crust restaurants serve fish that way. I don't frequent those establishments. I worked in the fish business for more than forty years. When we have fish, I cook it.

Comment from GARY MACLEAN
I too came from a poor upbringing. Our special treat was popcorn and Vernor's ginger ale while watching the Ed Sullivan show on Sunday night.
A couple of considerations:
Para 4, 2nd sentence: Is the (c) in the word (black) supposed to look like that?
Para 7, 1st sentence: CONSIDER (toward) rather than (towards)
Para 11, 2nd sentence: Add comma after (So)
Para 12, 2nd sentence: Remove comma after (Neil)
Great story. I have often wondered why serve a fish with its head still on. For me, I'll take Long John Silver any day.
Fun read as usual Wendy.

Thanks Gary for your review and suggestions. The problem is not the "c", it's the fancy "k" next to it with this new font. It's the same in the word "shock".
Appreciated - I am glad you enjoyed it.

Thank you for sharing this writing prompt entry with us. I can't eat a fish with the head remaining myself. When we go down to the Gulf of Mexico, many restaurants serve the catch-of-day. We always have that days catch fish. It can change from day to day. Anyway, I always request it be headless. My husband teases me. I also want to note, I had my first four boys in less than 71/2 years. I've teased, I was either pregnant or nursing that entire time. My last son came almost 8 years later SURPRISE!! LOL I enjoyed reading and got a smile from it.

What a delightful story - a great entry for the contest. I can just imagine how your brother must have felt, he probably was expecting fish like he was used to having. I am glad your father was able to settle things, but I am sure you were all feeling rather embarrassed. You have told it well.

Oh my goodness, that was a surprise indeed, Wendy. I would have thought the menu might have included a description of what would appear on the plate. I have seen fish served this way though and I imagine the fish itself might have been quite tasty.
This is well-written. Good luck in the contest.

Thank you Judy. I think the menu added that it was baked in some herbs, but I don't remember the details of head and eye being there. Lol. I enjoyed your review.

Oh, l didn't know that there was such an age span between the oldest and the youngest in your family! Poor Neil !! I don't think we ever went to a restaurant like that one! Best wishes in the contest.
It could be just me but the first sentence confused me until I read it over. I think "steps" confused me. Maybe "intervals"?

Thanks Helen. You are probably right. When we were little, our heads looked like descending steps, but "intervals" might be more suitable. Lovely review.

I really enjoyed reading your story and can so relate to it. I could never eat a fish with a head still on and always make sure of it if I order fish. Fish and chips in newspaper was a real treat when I was a kid and still would be now that we are all programmed to eat healthily. Good luck in the competition. Jen.

I enjoyed the story of Neil and the fish! Neither my husband nor I care much for fish, whole and sliced. Once when I was on a big diet, I ordered flounder broiled. When Leon told me he could see the fish guts, I was done with broiled fish forever! In my family we were four-five years apart. The baby was every body's favorite.

Thanks for reviewing, Tom. Always appreciated. We've had a week of lovely weather, but a bit more rain today. The flood waters are down, but the cleaning up and repairing still continues. Plenty are still in temporary accommodation while they work on their homes. I go in two afternoons a week to the Disaster Recovery Centre, and that will be open for at least another month, at which time they are predicting another flood because the dam is still full and the ground is still wet, and land contours have changed with excessive development, and the waters can't flow away as well as they should. Ongoing saga this year. We've had a huge amount more rain than in a normal year.

Lol, I can relate to this. I remember mortifying my Mum when I was a teenager and we went to a posh restaurant, and I asked for beans on toast because I hated the sound of everything on the menu. It fascinates that the more you pay for food, the more repellant it seems to get!

Lol. That can be so true! And the smaller the serves as well, and the longer it takes to prepare. Thanks so much for your review.
