I think truth is as debatable as the weather, and history will always be viewed through a lens that changes tone and tint as the prevailing winds of perspective flutter and flit. Of course, that doesn't mean we can't strive for something as close to fact as possible, and honesty - something we can control - is the first step on that path.

I thought this was an excellent piece.

Pontius Pilate asked Jesus why he came to earth - he answered it was to bear witness to the truth. Pilate then asked, "What is truth?" That is precisely what your well-crafted poem is asking. Some feel the holocaust never happened and that man never set foot on the moon. How can we be sure? There were eyewitnesses of the holocaust who are still alive. And the Bible was written, especially the four gospels, by eyewitnesses. As for the moon? I don't really care.Time reveals what is true and what is not. Bible prophecy is being fulfilled right before our eyes. And that is what really matters...

You have written what I have often thought. How do we know what is real and what is a guesstimate when it comes to History. I listen to history lessons on the weekend when I paint. Most of what I hear is so different than what I was taught. Which is the truth or is any of it true. Maybe it's somewhere in the middle. Well done and very thought provoking.

Man is lower than animal. For all time since god created a paradise, nothing has changed man's behaviour. For those who love the Lord, we know where the present is going to end. 666 is having a great time now. All we can do is pray and keep god's word written on our hearts. Thanks for sharing Roy. K xx

Well written. History is always recorded with the colouring of the culture which is recording it - and therefore there will be many different perspectives on the one event. The Bible has the benefit of being guided and inspired by God's Holy Spirit, and is therefore reliable and trustworthy, although we may not understand it all. Very thought-provoking and thoughtful.

First, your notes my friend -- I, too, know it to be true by "inner knowledge", confirmed by Scripture (and I feel supremely blessed)!

I think that a lot of recorded history is slanted by the people recording it and the times in which they live... But you're right -- only God knows for sure.

Wonderful poem, Roy -- food for thought indeed! "...how can we know, and merely trust the past's recorded notes?"

Hello Roy,
Thanks for asking this controversial question. I suppose that if only one person or group were to record historical facts, that they could come into question. What we are experiencing now, at least in this country, is a desire to change the historical records. If history doesn't fit the desired mind set, books are re-written, facts are distorted and taught as truth and statues are torn down, all for political gain. I'm glad that the four gospels are available and are backed up by the book of Acts. God in all His wisdom knew that it takes more than one witness to be able to verify the facts. Thanks for sharing.
Have a blessed day.

This is one to ponder on for sure. I've never considered how the writers of our history have not witnessed it firsthand. It makes sense. Thanks for sharing, Roy. Best, JohnC

It is typically the powers that be who write the history of their era and from their own perspective. Many voices are quieted, but over time as their truths are also listened to and included, does the text of history become richer with more understanding and knowledge to deliver to future generations.

A timely and very well written poem, Roy. May those who want to silence others' voices listen to your sage words.

Thank you for sharing.

Reading this poem, Roy I remember my husband used to say, the victors write history, so we may never really know the truth. In our own country, we were taught a one-sided history instead of both sides which we now hear about. This is a poem that does make us ponder. Good one Roy.
cheers,
valda
