Oh yes, this is the type of inspiration I need. Strange, but intelligent. This story does something to me. You have a very fresh style I think. This is not what I'm used to reading and that is a plus. Thank you again for the story and the inspiration.

Great stuff! I'm fairly new to Fan Story so just finding my way around, but so glad I came upon this great period piece. Well written and very intriguing. I've penned a few horror stories over the years but have yet to post one here - thanks for the inspiration to get on with it!

This was a marvelous story. So well-written. You had a great hook at the beginning and a great preamble to the real action of the story--an event which was incredible at the start but soon gave way to an actual happening.

Although Gracey couldn't answer Hammond's question about the greatest element of terror, I think he learned what it was through his encounter with the unknown creature. And added to that, no one believed him at first. That is true terror when you can't convince anyone that something horrible is happening to you.

I loved the language you used with phrases such as: "Ha! Intellectualism is a disparate opponent to man's basest fears."

I can see why this won the contest. Brilliant job!

An exceptional horror story in the style of Conan Doyle. It surprised me that such a brilliant twosome would not think to cost the invisible entity with flour or paint so that its morphology became visible

Good luck wishes regarding the contest, G. Definitely an interesting picture. It was a picture of an old fashion bed with a candle glowing on the desk while on each side of the bed sat an electric lamp. This was indeed a tale of horror. That Dr. Hammond suggest such a thing and then it comes true. Things do go bump in the dark. Very well done and greatly enjoyed.

Brilliantly written and very evocative of Victorian writers like Conan Doyle and Wells. I could see this as a BBC Christmas scary story a la Mark Gatiss.

I spotted one small problem highlighted below where I thought a comma was needed between 'tobacco' and 'where', rather than a full stop, otherwise, the first sentence just hangs.
'Having filled our bowls with some recently acquired Turkish tobacco. We headed off.....'

This is a fabulous write!!

Through word painting, "showing not telling," and a plethora of sensory details, you successfully pulled me " into," the world you have created.

As the suspense grew, I found myself gobbling up the words to see where the story would take me next.

I appreciate the presentation and authentic dialogue.

The story engaged me from the start and held me until the release at the end.

Thank you for sharing your talent

You have done an excellent job of writing your horror story in the manner of Poe. Your horrible creature is more frightening for being so surreal and occurring to others, who undoubtedly fear they are mad. Early in the story you say Gracey settled down, . . . determined to have a restless night. Do you mean restful at this point in the story? Best of luck in the horror contest.

This is an excellent story and well-written. Best wishes in the contest.

That's a gorgeous picture of a bedroom you posted. Very elegant.
I tried to erect intellectual walls to combat their [potentency], [potentcy] [,]but they crumbled in the face of their vividness.
