This is spectacular! Wish I had a six. The tale was told so well with perfect rhyme. I felt like I was reading Longfellow. What a horrific disaster you survived. A couple notes follow.

'to and fro.' -- don't see need for quotes. I think they diminish.
I peddled back home, not far down the street. ==> pedaled
on a 'two by four' devoid of all nails -- two-by-four without quotes?
