Aryr,

You have a natural talent for writing compelling stories. This is an excellent entry in the This Sentence Starts The Story. It is sad story about a father and son never seemed to reconcile. His tears however, at his father's funeral suggest he forgave him. Well done.

All the best in the contest,

Eugene

As this was a contest entry Alie that accounts for the shortness of the piece. It was just getting interesting. It's been so long since I read any of your writing it was lovely. Love and good cheer Anne

This is an interesting road you took after the opening sentence, Alli. It's so sad when families are torn apart because of one jumps to conclusions and another refuses to stick around for an apology. In few words, you've told what the long term effects can be. The son became the Duke, but I'm sure he regretted not forgiving his father. Well done. Good luck in the contest.

I always wondered how we as writers come up with stories, Alie. :) We write about anything and about nothing, from a frog to a Prince Charming. Do we have someone whispering in our ear or is the muse on call when we need her/him? I find it hard to write sometimes. This is a good entry for the This Sentence Starts The Story. Thank you for sharing.

This is well written, constructed, and realized.

You have done a great job with the prompt, as this is a terrific contest entry that I hope will do well.

Your descriptive language paints a vivid picture for the reader to view and experience.

The phraseology is captivating, as it pulls the reader "into" the world that you have created

'It was so important that you did, your livelihood just may depend on it?"' You don't need the question mark here. You do a good job of letting dialogue only carry the story. How sad that the son could only think ill of his father. All could have been avoided if he had
tried to communicate with him after the incident leading to his estrangement. Believe it or not, a similar event led to my sister's shutting my mother and me out of her life for three years.

"The Duke" is a well written story that tells an unfortunate tale of deceit and unforgiveness. When you dislike or hate someone, it does not hurt them. YOU feel the discomfort of ill feelings. You've written a meaningful story with a powerful message. Best wishes in the contest.

Hereditary titles will be passed on, but only if the heir apparent is living. But what a sad story, unforgiveness, it is the bane of mankind. It's the very fabric of destruction, and generations can inherit it, a number of places on earth will carry this from one generation to another. Beautifully written Alie, blessings Roy

Your contest entry read well, aryr. I enjoyed reading it. The
dialogue was a great way to tell the story. Joseph's mother
did more than stretch the truth. She lied to get him to return.
She probably thought she better get on his good side if he
inherited what he eventually did.
Thanks for sharing and best wishes in the contest, Jan
