This was a fun poem and makes me wish that such fun neighborhoods still existed. There was a lot of fear even before the pandemic and so many kids were not allowed to simply go play with friends nearby. Some were kept so busy in many extracurricular activities that they had no time for just fun play. Thanks for reminding me of the ideal type of healthy playtimes for kids. Best wishes in the contest!

Thanks so much Helen,. I truly appreciate that you were so insightful to what I was trying to do here. I had someone who marked me down for my grammar. Lol, it was the messing up of the grammar was my first goal of this poem. To make it more Dr Seuss like and repeat the words to make it sillier, all while trying to get a great message out there. Thanks so much my dear friend for you very kind comments.

When read aloud, as I would read "Hop On Pop" -- this totally works.

You are right... Readers should go back and enjoy each line, as they would if they were reading it to a child!

    Oh well...

I read somewhere that Lewis Carroll was criticized for making us "silly nonsense words" and thus demeaning the art of writing.

Of course, the poem was "Jabberwocky" ~ I'm fairly sure Carroll got the last laugh on that one!

    (I loved your poem!)

Hello author, a fun poem. I could feel the child within you. I like how you went through the different types of play.

Of special note:
Hope my play friends had fun, and my poem understood

(author, we all had a lot of fun, and we understood the poem.)

Good rhyming. Great photo choice. 11 kids. I guess my 10 grandkids are visiting and they brought a friend? As this is a contest entry, I wish you good luck. LateBloomer

I love this verse!!!

It is light, carefree, whimsical, and a joy to read.

Life is complicated right now for me, this was a welcomed distraction. It made me smile.. thank you for that!!

I actually read it quite quickly and the timbre created by the rhymes reminded me of a ping pong ball bouncing on a table.

I appreciate your presentation, the image, font choice, and color story are perfect!!

Thank you so very much Kitty. I love that you seemed to get all the ,messages and the fun too. The fact that it made you smile, also made me smile. Another chain reaction and I love that I was able to do that again for you. I wish I could do more. Please know you're being thought of with much love and caring. Thanks for the kind words for my poem, my lovely friend!

This was a perfect children's poem. It shows that no matter what we do, we can learn from it. The rhyming scheme was very good and the rhythm and flow were great. I enjoyed your children's poem very much. Gtetchen

I really like your poem; it is a message that is needed today. Children need play time, they learn to get along with others, share, settle disputes and then get over them. I fear for children today, who spend so much time on cell phones and other technology, do they learn these things?

Oh Anne I couldn't agree with you more. I wanted this to be as fun as we had reading Dr Seuss (my favorite childhood author) to our children. I had one review today criticizing my grammar and telling of ways I could correct it.
Lol, what they didn't realize that it takes a little bit of thought to mess up our language just to make it fun for a child. I have a 12 yr old grandchild that everyone in the family says he either inherited grandma's creativity or was that since he first started talking we would take turns saying silly lines that would rhyme with each other. I wish I had written them down.Y'know at 12 he still does it with me Sorry to be rambling, but I truly appreciate your lovely comments so much. Thank you my dear friend!

Excellent poem to motivate children to get out and play rather than stayed glued to a smartphone or other tech device. Stanza three is the best as it points out practical reasons for playing house or sports. Good luck in the contest.

You did a great job with your fun poem, Mystery Author.
I enjoyed reading it. I read it through, then read it aloud.
It sounded like one a youngster would enjoy. I like the
repeated words and the emphasis on the word play. Your
rhymes worked well, and you gave readers great examples
of why play is important. Psychologically speaking, play is
a vital part of a child of any age learning to fit in and growing
from experiences by playing. That word 'playing; isn't just speaking
about running, jumping, games, etc. It means part of a child's
development that cannot be overlooked. Without it, children
suffer in ways known and unknown. Your poem was more than
just a 'fun' poem. It had a vital message to all.
Thanks for sharing and best wishes in the contest, Jan

I think the idea of the poem is that fun is as important as work. Playing teaches as you have fun. I think some of the mono rhymes sound a little forced.
It does fit the topic well. The words match the pictures well.
Good luck in the contest.
Keep writing and stay healhty

Thanks so much Joan. I know that the sillier with word play poems, the more my grandkids loved the Dr Seuss silliness. And since this was only to show how important play is to even learning and being a good friend, it felt right to me. Thank you again for your kind comments and feedback. As always, I do appreciate both.

Never underestimate the play among children as they grow and learn how to make friends and helps them become accepted into their social circle, the learning never stops when we are older, a poignant write, love Dolly x
