Democracy is so precious, however the infectious worm is as mighty dangerous as worms in our intestinal systems. Slowly they take over and reek havoc. Truth expressed in this poem might seem political, but democracy's absence brings about a great deal of personal pain. Think about how you will negotiate the upcoming Thanksgiving dinner!!! Excellent, thoughtful and well written poem

I think when all is lost, we won't see it coming. We probably won't even know it's happening until afterwards. I loved your line about the land turning dark despite the light. Sometimes, intention isn't enough. Sometimes, reality is impossible to divine. When that happens, a fix is like shooting a swarm of bees with a nail gun.

The world faces much change. No one is safe walking the streets. Kids are not safe behind the school doors. Nor are the citizens at church. We have to be on guard wherever we travel. A masked person could be lurking underneath the freeway. Standing in line at an ATM could cost you your life. It is a sad situation. Thank you for sharing. Try to have a great weekend.

I agree with this author's words. We are losing our democracy! The
author's words speak volumes to me! As the author states our traditions
are dying. The poem flows and connects well. This poem resonated with
with me even though what is happening is so hard to accept.

powerful poem about the threat poised by the rise of the neo-fascists in the United States and around the world. the far right is on the move and democracy is at threat.

So true. Your beautifully written poem spells out what has become the fear of so many. Is the democracy we've all fought so hard for becoming a thing of the past?
Our leaders of our so called free world, all seem so chinless. I truly fear for the future. Ulla:)))

Well thought out, well written, great rhymes. Your last stanza sadly speaks the truth of where we stand today. It is bad enough that we are losing our democracy, but even worse that we have lost the will to do anything about it. We have become such sheep.
A very good write.

There is very real fear of democracies being lost all around the world. Yet the leaders everywhere seem weak in leadership skills and a caring vision, and are mostly self-serving. Australia has a new Pro
I enjoyed Minister who is a humble and caring man, and he is becoming a wise and excellent leader, so far at least. Thanks for sharing your thoughtful poem.

I know not and need not know which side of the aisle you stand. FS is not a place for politics. Still, your words resonate quite true. Good job. .............................................................................................

Hey thanks Tom. I looked ,to see when you joined FS. I joined in 2005
which gives me 17 years on this site and at least 3000 poems in my port and in 2006 was the Polar Bear on the strength of formalist style and
at least half were issues that were geared to, as Charles Baudelaire so
aptly stated, the blood and guts of life. FS has no restrictions whatsoever on what you write or that write's subject. Thanks again Tom. easy
