A fine tribute to one of the all-time great songs of a generation. I like that you also mentioned the men it was about.

Great stuff. I thought this could use a twenty-fifth review. It was a great write-up.

Hello mystery author. This is one of my all time favorite songs of all time. Everything you said about them I have to say, ditto, ditto or better yet AMEN!
Even tho I was younger in the sixties, my parents supported the Kennedys and Martin Luther King and to still remember exactly where I was in November 1965 when we got the message of JFK and also in 68 of the other two, shows how back then we took these men into our hearts more personally than I have ever done since towards any politician. Not sure when I started to stop trusting, but it may have been after finding out that President Johnson owned or had big stock in the helicopters used in Vietnam, or Richard Nixon, and all he did to disgrace our nation. Humphrey was our choice too for personal reasons. The sixties was the end of an era for so many things. The loss of innocence for our Nation and other accounts in my life. It amazed me that my memory for being a child was so vivid of those days and this song was phenomenal. Thank you for sharing this and good luck in the contest. This is Awesome!

Debi, thank you for the six stars! I do think you are right, it was a loss of innocence and a time of change.

You have an open, youthful quality to this piece that brings out the feeling of hope and genineness of the beliefs we developed under the influence of such positive and pragmatic leadership. Nicely done nand a fine tribute ot a better time.

Thanks for writing about this wonderful song that still makes me misty-eyed today, also. It was such a different time when Martin, John, and Robert died. Lincoln's time was different in another way, but there was war in the background of all four. Your story is well-organized and proofread. Best of luck in the contest.

Well now, this is superb -- a history lesson flawlessly presented within the required topic for the contest. I predict a winner, my friend. And now I am rushing off to Google the song... (I'm not American and don't remember it.) :)
Update: Found it, and I remember it well now -- thank you SO MUCH! I loved this song too, but thanks to PTSD, it was one I had completely forgotten. So you see? That's what your wonderful essay did for me!
I wish I had a six for this!!!!!!!

Dear Author, you know, reading these, I'm finding that I know these songs, but not by the titles. I ask Google to play them for me, and say to myself, "I know that song! I knew it as a kid!" Haven't heard some of them for a long, long time... like this one. I never really knew the words to this one though, being born in '64 I suppose I never really paid much attention, but I do see what you mean. A choice choice for your favorite song. :)

We must never forget, as fine a thing as fighting for equal rights and equitable treatment for all people is, only God is going to be able to make it happen. This is not to say that we should not try our best to make it happen. Satan the Devil is a very powerful agent of hate. He has clouded the minds of so many who mix greed and hatred into a powerful cocktail that once drank, see murder and discrimination as acceptable means to achieve their desired goals.

Yes, I think when John F Kennedy was assassinated, hope died a little, not only for the US, but for the free world. And when Bobby Kennedy was likewise killed, it was the end of innocence also, and a pall fell over the world, until I found it again in Christ. Beautifully written my friend, good luck, blessings Roy

This is a great entry to the Special Song contest. That song to this very day makes me misty too. Naw, I sometimes cry. Loved this essay. It is in a great font size. It is clearly stated. There is a part that you could elect to leave out, unless you need a certain word count. That part is about Hubert Humphrey. It doesn't fit the main idea of the story about the song and the people connected to the song. It begins with ~The Democratic convention....to vote for Humphrey.
The visual fits perfect. Although you got off topic once this is a well-done essay. I still give you a six. Good luck in the contest.

Sandra, I see your point; I am not, nor can anybody be, sure that Humphry would have gotten the nomination had Bobby not been killed. It is very likely Kennedy would have been the candidate. I thought the Humphry nomination and the election process were all part of the song.

Thank you very much for the six stars!

I don't remember it being in the song, but it might be. I don't recall exactly all the lyrics. You are welcome. It was a good read.
