Excellent choice for excellent reasons. Very nicely written.
He signed the Emancipation Proclamation Act freeing all slaves. - The proclamation only freed slaves of the states that rebelled. Maryland slaves were not freed.

A song from the past that resonates with today's world. Here we are, all these later, still fighting some of the battles we thought were fought and won years ago. I always loved that Martin Luther King line" We, as a people, will get to the promised land.' Although I know he may have been speaking to his black brothers and sisters on the surface, I believe he spoke to all of us willing to fight for what is right. Great post and good contest entry. ann

I was also in my early twenties, and couldn't stop crying finding out there was that much hatred in this country. Thank you for including information about the song's writer and singer. I also tear up when I hear that song - even to this day. I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that you and I, and others here, lived (and suffered) through 1968 - a terrible year for this country.
You talk about your emotional connection, a little about each person honored in the song, and who and how it was recorded (and covered). Very thorough and touching.
Take a look at the paragraph that begins, "I admired all the men . . ." - the second sentence in that paragraph seems awkward, maybe a missing word.
