Hi Rod,
I wish I had a sixer left. Terrific poem! I enjoyed it. And it's easy to tell you enjoyed your grandfather.
I especially liked these lines,
"Though old and lame he did not whine,
but grasped each day with eagerness."
That's me! I still walk the trail in Grand Bay, closing in on 160 miles at the moment. But I can feel the years are catching up to me, even at 72. I have my "dizzy moments".
He liked watching baseball games. I can't get into regular season games. But I'll tell you, I enjoyed the playoffs this fall and the World Series between the Astros and the Phillies. I was hoping for the Phillies, but my favored team rarely wins. Twenty-six year old Alec Bohm really impressed me. But Houston won. The game revolves around the pitching.
My favorite verse,
"Ya gotta start the day off right,
especially when you're my age, Pete.
So I avoid what's on Page One
and give myself a little treat."
Congratulations on winning the "Good Old Days" contest!
Nicely penned! Warm and sincere.
Cheers,
Kimbob

Hi, Kimbob. Many thanks for sharing my poem and expressing your thoughts about it, getting old, and the World Series. I envy your ability to still hike trails. I manage to walk a mile or two on an indoor track daily, and pat myself on the back. Rod

This certainly deserved to win, Rod! I dreaded the title of the contest so I didn't even peek at the entries lest it be of some political rant or another. But you kept it personal, relatable, and endearing. Congratulations!!

Rod,

Nice win! I recall a similar scene with my Dad. On Sundays, we bought the Daily News, New York Daily Mirror, and Herald Tribune. My memory is fuzzy, but I think one of them cost only a dime in the mid-50s. Cartoons, sports pages, and Parade magazine were my favorites. Thanks for those memories.

Mark

P.S. Later in HS, through a civics class subscription, I got the NY Times for a nickel!

Thank you so much, Mark, for sharing my poem and the congrats. My father always bought the San Francisco papers and the local Reno papers. Rod

First, congratulations on the win. I loved the poem and especially the artwork which reminded me of my own grandfather setting in his chair. In fact, I wrote a poem about him setting in his chair, but he was watching TV.

Yes, I do remember when the Sunday paper was almost two heavy for me and my little brother to carry! My dad loved to read the paper as my brother and I fought over the comics. Those were the good old pre-digital days. I enjoyed this bit of nostalgia...

Like your Sunday newspaper poem. I remember being excited when I would pick up the Sunday paper. So, I know how your grandpa felt. It had lots of advertisements in it, too.

Beautiful poem. It came to life as you took us with him and yourself through each section of the Sunday paper. That was sufficient for us to revisit those good old days. Best wishes for your entry.

Remember the Sunday paper when it was paper?
with all the news this side of the equator!
Now most newspapers are offered online,
and they're so bad it makes me want to whine.
The ones that still get delivered to my porch
don't have enough paper to make a torch.

and then one by one local papers were sent to their deaths through a 1/2 dozen conglomerates, having editors appointed only IF they agreed to MAKE the news instead of reporting it. May Walter Cronkite rest in peace.
