Ciao mystery poet, I gave you your 6 th vote.

About a year ago I heard for the first time Starry Night by McLean.

Beautiful song about
Van Gogh, I love his paintings.

I had never heard the song American Pie..but was enticed to read your entry when I realised McLean wrote it.

I listened to the video you provided first then read your input.

Thanks for breaking it down and explaining the meaning behind the words.

Brilliant. Love the concept for this poem of a favorite song. Mixing the music lyrics and in between an important event with celebrities throughout, simply brilliant. Long long song ago. good to hear again.

The choice of American Pie evokes that definite sea change that occurred when Elvis was drafted, and Buddy Holly filled the gap and became iconic. His death, along with all the other loss of that era, really did throw a pall over a generation.

Hi Bill, I agree with you 100%. The death of the singers were a metaphor for, 'the day the music died.' But Don McLean also used the term as a more over all term, that talked about the age of loss of innocence in our nation, after JFK was killed, and later Bobby and MLK. Then Vietnam war being a senseless killing spree because Johnson owned much stock in the helicopter factory that served Vietnam, There was a turmoil never seen before in the lyrics and drugs shown to affect some warped minds such as Helter Skelter and other songs by mostly John Lennon, with the Beatles and Mick Jagger as they talk about Jack jumped over a candlestick, as many proclaimed God to be dead and the people that were so drawn in by some of these singers were first in Line to believe it and help spread the propaganda. So as much as it talks about a metaphor or figure of speech of when Holly and others died was when the music died, that was just the beginning. The rest goes on and on,, just as the song does. I doubt anyone could argue that it was the decade where most change was encountered, from good to evil. Sorry to go on and on Bill, but no wonder McLean chose this decade to write about in American Pie. Thanks for your awesome comments my friend.

A very clever entry, incorporating all that music, and its relevant social history into one poem. Brought back memories, and also showed how insightful the song writers were at that time. Best wishes for your entry in the contest.

A very accurate translation of a song I never really understood or liked all those years ago. This posting, along with around fifty years spent on learning this life process has provided new understanding.
This really is a brilliant and fitting tribute to a great song.

Oh thank you so much my sweet friend! I appreciate your kind words and the common love of the song. I was in tenth grade when it came out so we must be close to the same age? But thanks again for your thoughtful review!

I had all of Don McLean's albums - but this song wasn't among my favorites like Vincent. You did a great job merging the lyrics plus adding the interpretation of the song into the poem. Best wishes in the contest!

Oh Helen, I loved Vincent, Starry Nights. I got the chills just thinking about it. But I used American Pie, because there were so many hidden meanings that I had to research to share them with all. It was the loss of innocence and people turning away from God and a time of remembering where we all were when JFK was assassinated. I also used it to make people aware that the lyrics to so many songs were so evil, which a lot of people were not aware of with how the Beatles, mostly John Lennon had changed to disrupt our youth, (us) at that time, and of course the Rollingstone's Mick Jagger, how bad it had become. So as much as I loved many other songs more, I knew with this one, I could help some understand and also it would get the attention.
Thanks so much for your kind words, as always my dear friend.

Yes, I think one DJ's interpretation focused on the "widowed bride" as referring to JFK's widow Jackie. But others said it was a reference to Buddy Holly, Don McLean's idol and that a lot of it was music references. You're right that music and popular media has the power to insidiously lure people away from the Lord!
