I like how you equated each stanza to the news of the day. The sixties were definitely a time of change. It was a time of unrest both in war time and social time. Awakening some say. Loss of innocence others would say. Great poem. Gretchen

Gretchen, as always, you are so sweet! I did lots of research on this before writing and found these were the most popular ideas of what the song meant. Such a Time of nostalgia for all who I hear from. However when McLean was asked what it meant to him, he said that it meant he'd never had to work again. Lol. Thanks for your very kind comments.
    Much appreciated, my dear friend!

You did a great job with a classic song, Mystery Author.
I liked the perfect image first of all. You formatted the
lines well. I liked how you emphasized those chosen then
expressed your thoughts and feelings below. You painted
a great picture of the turmoil of American society during the
time. Your lines read well and created great imagery. I believe
this song means many 'things' to many people. It is one of those
songs you can't get out of your head after hearing it. Not only
that, but it contained such profound words/meanings in general.
Thanks for sharing and best wishes in the contest, Jan

This is very clever how you wrote this poem. I like the music lyrics that you inserted within the poem. It puts some pizzaz in the verses; on top of it, the ones who passed were icons for the music world.

This is a good found poem that shows that a lot of people died that those song lyrics could be about. Along with Richie Valens, Buddy Holly (he was the one with the widowed bride) and The Big Bopper, JFK and MLK died in the 1960s. They all represented dreams that did not come to fruition.
Good luck in the contest.
Keep writing and stay healthy

Joan, you are so very sweet. I cannot get too much of this song. That is why I picked it, as just like you the nostalgia has happy but sad memories. Especially remembering where we were when Kennedy was shot. I think I was in third grade at the time, in country school. The fact that so many here have such similar feelings looking back at that day, brings so many of us together. Not sure if you read this too, but more recently when McLean is asked what this song means, he says it means he doesn't have to work again. Lol! Thanks my friend for you kind comments!

You're welcome. I don't remember when JFK died. I was only 3. I do remember when Robert Kennedy died. I remember seeing his funeral on TV.

And I truly appreciate your very kind words my dear friend. I have never heard of any one who didn't love this song and appreciate what the lyrics meant. As much as there was much turmoil, even as children we remember where we were when JFK was killed. I think it was right after that when we started distrusting our leaders. Thanks again Dolly!

That was so well done, a most enjoyable poem with the lyrics of several songs. All songs I enjoy. So many famous people died, and so many were great. I really enjoyed the Epilogue, it tied it all up nicely. Well done and good luck in the contest. :) Sandra xx

Very nicely done. I remember them all quite well.
I was able to get a You Tube song downloaded once, but not since.
Best wishes and good luck in the contest.

Dear Mystery Poet,

Wow. What an impactful piece! There is so much depth here - some of it we can easily grasp - but there's much more that would require repeated readings and lots of thought. *smile* Neither of which I am known to sit and do -- hahaha! But even in this light reading, so much of your message came bounding through. Lovely! Thanks and good luck!

Hi Robyn, I am just so disappointed because my computer is in the shop now, I have this new ipad and I did something and it has knocked me out of my texting and won't let me put videos up. I did all the extra research for this piece, hoping that if I could get it in closer lines, it would certainly help, then I would have more room to give more info about the song. But it was so cool and the music dying was yes, after Buddy Holly and Big bopper died, but also the age of innocence when the evil from music took over. Much like some of the rap and others that I don't listen to now a days. Anyway thanks so much Robyn, you are a sweetheart!

Since Tom updated the FS Word Processor I've had to 'relearn' how to create posts. Mine were also showing up with those extra lines - so irritating!

But I figured out that if I work with the options in the toolbar just above the big box for entering text, I can fix that.

Go to 'edit'. When you open your post, find the 'format' option in the tool bar - it's like three or four buttons directly to the LEFT of the font color choices.

There's a BLUE button above that - when you hover your mouse over it, it will say 'Select all'. Click that. It should highlight your whole post.

Then in the 'format' drop-down menu, select 'formatted'. After that, you may see a little difference in the spacing - but more importantly, you can go in and delete the blank lines in between your words. Try that and see if it works for you. Good luck!

Thank you so much for the help. After being gone all day, need to catch up first.

I was a teen when those three icons died, it should never have happened, the flimsy plane went down on their way to an urgently booked concert, a very sad day for we fans. The song came out in 1971, I think they died in 1959. Well dine, brilliantly written, good luck, blessings Roy

That was interesting! I always felt that there was more to that song (that will never get out of your head once you hear it!) and you do a great job of sharing what the lyrics mean. This was very interesting!
