We think of wolves as fierce and dangerous, but as you so well express it, they have faithful relationships and a social order to care for others. They can also feel profound sorrow.

Another fine poem, Gypsy....and cool-looking pictures--would make a cool front and back album cover, say, "The Carnivor in The Blue," well, Id have to work on the title!

Both pictures were wonderful, Gypsy. It was definitely a great tanka. The fact that she was mourning her lost mate was a devastating event. Perhaps he is just late returning. Blessed Be n Hugs!

One time, a little over 40 years ago. We were living in absolute nowhere Missouri, on a farm. There was a small road in front of the house. There had been a snowstorm, and nobody was going anywhere. I had a 9-month-old baby. He was fusing so I got up to rock him back to sleep. It was the wee hours of the morning. I glanced out the window, the moon was shining, and the light glistened off the snow. Down the middle of the snow packed road walked a pack of wolves. They were very scary but very beautiful. Your poem reminded me of that.

That's quite a great set of graphic images! I like that the wolves can freely express their mourning of long absent loved ones through their nightly howling. Nicely done tanka!
