Are you by any chance a disguised Mr. Bowman? This is a lovely story of devotion to someone who has gone on ahead and is awaiting the one she loves. Great story.

I agreed with everything you mentioned, Terry. Many of those
riles of HOA are just plain stupid. Some won't even allow an
American flag to be displayed. I enjoyed your story and apparently
Chelsea did too and understood the significance once you
explained your reasons. That rule is ridiculous. I'm thrilled you
went ahead and put up the lights. Even in a specialized condo,
there needs to be a way to express one's feelings.
Thanks for sharing, Jan

I'm surprised you didn't enter this in the Christmas Story contest; it would probably do well. I enjoyed the story very much, and I loved the ending. Your story is a lovely reminder of the meaning of Christmas.

Thank you for the review. I do have three more Christmas stories I will post in the next two weeks. One will be in the Christmas story contest. It is something I have never tried before, a fantasy about Santa. Thanks, Terry.

This fellow liked his Christmas lights each Christmas. Lights do make it festive and merry. I was wondering if you noticed that you need to add a quotation mark behind the sentence that ends in show?

Rosemary, thank you for reading and for your review. I didn't do the quotation marks for several paragraphs including the one you mentioned, because the same speaker continued to speak. I closed them out when Mr. Bowman ended his story. Thanks, Terry.

That makes sense. Thank you for clarifying.

So, this one gave me the tingles, and, if I still had a sixth star left, I would have bestowed it for this touching, lovely story. I'm so glad Chelsea was not such a stickler that she didn't have room in her heart for this "exception." It felt like a Hallmark movie in a FS post. Very well done, Terry. xo

I used to live in a rather hoity-toity condo complex where, although it wasn't "written," it was "understood" that homeowners would keep their garage doors closed at all times. (well, except maybe when their vehicles were exiting or entering...) Unfortunately, my automatic clicker broke, and before I had the chance to replace it, I had the unmitigated gall to leave my garage door up one entire afternoon!!! HERESY, I tell you. Shameful, shameful, SHAMEFUL!! (And I swear to you Terry, there was not ONE item in that garage other than my car. Bare. Bones. So, imagine my incredulity when the head of the Homeowner's Association came to my front door and said, "Your garage door is open." I explained about my broken clicker and assured her I would be getting it repaired soon. Her response was, "Well, it's VERY unsightly!" Fiery redhead that I am (and substantially younger and less in control of my thoughts-to-spoken-word reflex), I was not nearly as magnanimous as your girl Chelsea. I, by contrast, gave the old bag a big condescending smile and said, "Well, that's why G-d gave you eyelids." (And then I went extra long before having it repaired.) Needless to say, your Hallmark version is way sweeter and more enjoyable. So, thank you!

LOL. Your story is a whole lot more fun than mine! You ought to do a collection of stories...The Fiery Redhead...

I used to be a fiery red head, but now days it's less fire and very little red. Thank you for the kind review and your great story. Terry.

Well, without the help of L"Oreal, I would be a fiery old-lady gray. Can't have THAT now, can we??!! (I went Bride-of-Frankenstein gray at 25 when I was pregnant. So I've been covering it up for 41 years now!! I felt like I had no choice. When you're gray and fiery, they put you in places with locks on the front door. When you a redhead and fiery, they just put up with you. It's yet another perk, don'tcha know!

Very touching. Sometimes all it takes is a moment of conversation. I felt a chill when I heard the line about she might not know where I am. His connection to his late wife. Very moving. Just what I needed tonight. Thank you for posting. Gretchen

I love your story. I am so glad that Chelsea had some Christmas spirit and was willing to let Mr. Bowman keep his Christmas lights. These are the stories that restore our faith in mankind.
