That's for sure. Our kids are the ones going to pay the price for everything we do. I voted for you early this morning while I was still working. I'm glad to see the best piece is leading. Excellent little poem, Wendy. Best of luck but I'm pretty sure you have this in the bag.

Hi Wendy,
We are a wasteful generation. It's definitely true.
Packaging at the grocery store... plastic and cardboard.
I constantly go behind my wife, daughter and granddaughter... turning off lights!
I have tried to keep the thermostat down, but my wife and daughter like to be warm. I'd don a sweater. But not them. It's all about comfort.
I live in Saint John, New Brunswick. Cities grow, like weeds. Forests are chopped down to make room for homes and apartment buildings. Where do the deer go? They munch in people's yards. They also get killed by cars and trucks.

Carting groceries home... Many stores in our city don't use plastic bags anymore. They sell heavy duty bags that consumers can use over and over again. That's something positive. (Although, I probably have a hundred of these bags in two closets now!)

My favorite verse,
"We all live on this planet called Earth.
Have we considered its value and worth?
Horrid pollution - there's mess everywhere,
Creation is groaning - does no-one care?"

What are our kids and grandchildren going to do years from now? Pollution creates pollution. The polar ice is disappearing. Animals are going to be extinct in the near future. When they're gone, they are gone for good. Maybe we'll be extinct someday!
I like this sentence in your author notes...
"Small ripples can make big waves - we need a tidal wave of change."

Good Luck in the Conservation contest!

Hugs,
Kimbob

Thank you so much! A lovely review, and yes, we thinka long the same lines. Our country is showing some great initiatives in minimising use of plastic bags and plastic prooducts now, which is a good start. Hopefully we can improve the situation little by little and hopefully our children and grandchildren will have some creative initiatives too to prevent further loss and degradation. Thank you for your good wishes.

You have done an excellent job on this conservation contest entry. Your poem delivers a powerful message with many thought-provoking ideas. There is always something else each one of us can do to preserve our planet. If we don't focus on conservation, the next generations will have horrific problems to deal with. I wish you the best in the contest.

Thank you very much. I appreciate your kind words and your good wishes. Yes, individuals working on little things can spread ripples and then a big wave of change may result.

This is a good entry to the conservation poetry contest. The text is a great size. The message is clearly stated. It is a needed message for every nation on this earth. We must save the world for the next generation. The rhyme scheme is well done.
There is one awkward area in the poem that is ending line one with "do" and having in line two the third word "do". I would eliminate that do.
The visual fits well. Good luck in the contest.

Thank you Sandra. You are a very astute and thoughtful, observant reviewer! I don't know why I didn't see that, but I have changed it to "these things will add up ...". I appreciate your insights.

Hello Wendy,
Thanks for your thoughtful poem. I find that with all things there needs to be a balance. In this country, the first day in office our president shut down the oil pipeline, which has led to a massive rise in the cost of everything, not only here but world wide. While there may be some wisdom in a reduction of oil and gas, the alternative being offered hasn't been researched very well. It takes tons and tons of raw material to come up with what is needed for one battery to power an electric car. If even ten percent of the cars in this country were electric, how would they charge them? It takes thousands of watts of power to charge one electric car overnight. The wind mills that produce electricity have killed millions of song birds. Nothing is ever as simple as it seems. I believe that much of the environmental movement is politically motivated, and often pushed without the full understanding of what the effects of different policies will bring. I do agree however that we can be a lot more aware of our environment and how we use the resources that God has made us stewards over. Thanks for sharing this.
Have a blessed day.
Tom

Thank you Tom, for such a thoughtful and insightful review. I agree - there are no simple solutions. However we can each do our little bit to look after our envirenment and avoid polluting it any more than we must. I think the price of development to meet mankind's "needs" has led to a situation which probably is now insoluble. We have ben poor stewards of our planet, and will reap the consequences. I don't have a political agenda or bias and don't follow any environmental movement, but we are involved with Land Care, and looking after animals and their habitats. Thanks so much for reviewing. Always appreciated.

    Hi Wendy,
I'm not involved in with any group, but several times a year I go around with a trash bag and pick up all the litter along the street that people toss out of their cars. I just don't understand why anyone would do that. When I'm down in Hoonah I pick up plastic that has blown into the water. I know it breaks down. So many people are seemingly so concerned about things that are environmentally destructive, but will walk right by visible trash. I applaud you for doing your part gal. If we all did what we should, the world would be a much better place.
    Blessings

Your poem certainly gives us much to think about. There are so many things we can do, and if we each do the small things it will make a difference. Well written, Wendy.

You have touched on a problem that is becoming something that we must address quickly. It is hard for some to see the problem when they live in an area where the population is small, but there are many places on Earth where the problem is very evident.

Thank you. Yes, it is urgent, and many are aware, but think it is all a bit much, and they can't do anything. But together we can, if individuals are prepared to do little things and act together. Thanks for your insightful words.

I like how your poem spells out specific small steps we can take on a daily basis to help in saving our precious planet. I'm glad that there are programs to educate and children are taking part!
Best wishes in the contest!

This poem, Thinking and Acting Together, presented with six AABB-rhymed quatrains, reminds the reader that water, fuel, and forests all need to be considered on a daily basis.
