This is a well-written story that is, in fact, a sad time of loss and confusion for your family. Everyone should make their wishes known ahead of time and also in writing. My sister and I inherited a restaurant we did not want and were promised it would go to our step-father's daughters. Even the local newspaper took sides on that one. I pray you all can get along better in your case than ours and that God will ease your father-in-law's passing.

Wow. Thats a lot to digest. I'm sorry about what is going on. I would think that if John has written his wishes down there would be someway to carry them out. If not, his spouse would be the one to carry them out. Gripping and heartbreaking. I got my own answer for patience at 40. His name is Ty. Lol. God is cheeky. Lol. Thanks for posting. Gretchen

Agonizing situation. Even if he did NOT have a DNR, odds are that he would not have wanted to be revived if he was destined to die a dreadful death due to organ failure. Condolences.

Thank you for sharing this, barbara, and I am saddened by your news. I believe that every person has the right to be treated as they want. I know there are instances like you describe here that tear families apart. It happened in a small town in Delaware where I grew up.
It is very sad when an older person is disrespected when nearing death by someone who thinks they know better. I hope that some people in the family can work together to avoid this scenario. It would seem to me that the doctors have to honor the DNR order. You will be in my thoughts and prayers. Take care.
