It is certainly believable that a "narcissistic and strong-willed person" like Des would deny death and come back to make sure you knew it, but wow, must have been kinda scary for you. I think maybe that's what's missing from your story...your reaction to the whole experience. Have you seen or heard from him since this time? I've seen and talked to people I love who are dead, but in my dreams...I find it comforting? I cannot imagine your encounter with Des was comforting.

Thank you. Yes, it was a little scary at the time, but I wasn't really surprised he came back to let me know how angry he was about dying. It was his nature to get in the last word. No, he has not been back, but I can sense his presense now and than.

My goodness, he must have been in so much pain, for so long. I can see how his first reaction was denial. And I'm sure he did get in the last word letting you know how he felt about it all. I do believe that our loved ones are never really gone, they remain with us.

Thank you. I'm sure he was in pain, but he would never admit it. He was a hard man and difficult in a lot of ways, but I loved him anyway. I did make him into a cat lover.

This was an excellent story. I especially like the "burn him like garbage" part and how he had to have the last word. Thank you for sharing this, and best wishes to you.

Thank you. Yeah, I know it sounds silly but that is what he said in those last words. Seems like a strange thing for a spirit to say, but it was true. He wasn't all bad, I did turn him nto a cat lover.

I found the contest entry to be very thought provoking and it piqued my interest from the start. You describe Des as quite the character.
I find myself to be somewhat like Des in that I do not like taking medication and simply accept the pains and move on and deal with it.

Best of luck in the contest...

Cheers, John

Thank you. He was a unique and colorful character. His life story is interesting and I have considered writing a story based on it. He had his soft spots, too. I made him into a cat lover during our time together.

Your story was well-written, and it kept me intrigued. It must have been frustrating for you when he wouldn't go to the doctor. 'How dare you burn him like garbage' made me laugh. I guess some people find it easier to ignore the truth. Thanks for sharing, and good luck in the contest.

Thank you. Yes, I knew Des was quite ill and in pain but I wasn't strong enough to drag him to the doctor. When he was still alive he told me to cremate him. Those seems like strange words from a spirit or whatever it was, but I wrote it as he said it.

Nicely written. Good work.
I'm glad that you got along well, because narcissism has been given a very bad connotation lately.
I'm glad you are getting along well, but i hope you have help with the farm.
Best wishes.

Thank you. I no longer have the farm. It was sold before Des died and he had a life time lease. We still had some cattle, which I sold shortly after Des passed away. He was not an easy man to live with but I am a calm person and prety much ignored his outbursts. I even made him into a cat lover.

So this is a true story then? Ouch!
I'm so sorry for your loss.
I wish I had a six left, but I use them too quicky.
I have enjoyed your story enormously. It's very well written.

Thank you. Yep, it's true, and while it scared me at the moment, I wasn't surprised that Des would have to have the last word. I never heard from him again. It did make me believe in the supernatural, though.
