Enjoyed your thoughtful reminiscing of a more innocent time of the world. At least, it seemed that way to us. Yes, it would be nice to just not have these current problems or homelessness, drug abuse, shootings etc.
If only we could just unite in giving thanks to God for His Son and the gift of family.

I like living in our century. I love technology, for example, and all the things I can do thanks to it, like talking to you, studying in foreign universities online...
However, when I read the last verse I finally understood your nostalgia and felt a bit sad.

There is a very real mix of melancholy with every "merry" and I understand exactly what you are saying. Still ~ back in the days of yore there were homeless, and disease, and all manner of behaviors that were unsafe. Our awareness of then fades as the generations fade... And sadly, we are inundated with 24/7 "Breaking News" of every imaginable horror. On a micro level? We can still reach out and make a difference. We can! One ripple in the pond of goodwill. Just one. Let's all keep trying!

You couldn't have said it any better. Our society has somehow turned the beauty of the season into darkness with all the crime (people robbing others or breaking into homes and cars to steal gifts) And yes, the unfortunate who succumb to street drugs and resort to things so much worse. It's difficult to find the joy amongst families when they would prefer to fight and turn away from family. I miss the good old days too!
