Your writing is a lovely tribute to all the people of color who have served our country. I could never understand why some people judge others for being different. Only one is qualified to judge. Beautiful writing.

Thank you. As long as you know that the one who created us all loves us. What others think, say and do, does not really matter.

This is so beautifully written. The meter and rhythm is executed with perfection. I was in a thrift store and found a framed newspaper article about a man that turned 101. He was a Buffalo soldier. I couldn't leave him there and his amazing contributions and the history that went with it. So I bought it and have it hanging in my classroom where I teach high school English. Beautiful job.

Virtual Six, Nomi! And thank you for serving our country and for rising above all the hate and injustices that you had to deal with then and still do. It just make me so mad that I find it hard to write about. But I'm glad you did. Thank you!

-Thanks for sharing the image, notes, and poem, nomi.
-Effective imagery and rhyming couplets tell a story of these
soldiers who gave their all for their country and deserve our praise,
but more often than not received the opposite or worse.
-I like the opening couplet and the repetition of "I still rise."
-These are a couple of lines that stood out to me:
"You cannot defeat me with your obvious lies" and
"I am a blessed child of the most high
Covered and favored until the day I die"
-Very well done. Have a great New Year!!!

First off, thank you for your service. Without you , my father and many others we would not have the freedoms that we have today and I am very grateful! A very powerful poem and message. It's a shame that there are so many ignorant small minded people in this world. I am looking forward to the future when we will all get along. Very well written, great flow.

Thank you so much. I send out love to all because who needs love more than those small minded people who need love so desperately.

It is atrocious the way any Veteran is treated or has been in their
lifetime no matter what color. Those who try to put them down
fail to realize their freedom is/was they fought and died for. Our
gov't has failed in so many ways when it comes to ethical
treatment of all veterans. I say all, because a veteran
can and is one in the military who fought for those
who act as you wrote. Veterans see no color but the
red, white, and blue they fought for. Anyone who
doesn't stand for our country and her anthem should
be kicked out of the event and banned from returning.

Thank you for your comments. Unfortunately the National Anthem has become something of a hot button issue of late. Think Colin Kapernick and some others.

Those that act like CK are a disgrace. If not for the flag, none of them would be where they are today.

This is well crafted. I know this subject is important to you. And you have a POV about it. Have a great new year.

notes:

Served in your military during every war
Filed for veteran's benefits but did not get very far

- You may want to relook at the rhyme here.

I like the emotion that, no matter what happens, 'I still rise' above it all and stand tall. Unfortunately, this happens in our country too. We need to start to see people, not colour or race. Well written Nomi, a lovely tribute poem.
cheers.

Good for you, you spoke with your heart. I am always amazed at how mistreated all minorities have been. It should be and I am glad of your poetry which speaks about the fact that all of you will still rise no matter what or who tries to stop you or pull you down.
This poem is truly patriotic and shows the power you have to rise up above all the hatred in this country toward those of color.

Thank you Jesse. I was determined to illustrate my frustration, without expressing any bitterness. I pray that I succeeded.
