Good for you. Yes, I can just imagine the shock as you defied your grandmother. And fortunately, times have changed. You and your husband seem to have worked it out well. Serve one another in love. Thanks for sharing. Nice writing, straightforward and strong.

We are pretty equal in this. It was a different time, that's for sure. I appreciate your review. Gretchen

Three cheers for rebellion, Gretchen! I knew that the 50s, at least, were male-weighted, but I didn't remember back then having anyone so clearly and patently express a more like your Grandmother did. Your incident would have been in the 60s, though, wasn 't it? There was already a deep rumbling discontent over male/female inequality. I have a hunch that was why your mother winked at you. She was probably thinking, "What do I have here, a Gretchen Steinem?" (I know it's Gloria!) By the way, how did Brian react to you later?

The rumbles didn't start in Richmond until a few years later. Deeply rooted in tradition where I grew up. I was the square peg in a round world. Thank you for this awesome review. Gretchen

I agree with you. However, I have no problem with serving the 'menfolk' first, as we did in my day. I grew up in a patriarchal society and it still sticks with me today. I don't mind that at all. My sons grew up to be men who shared duties and such.

This wasn't a man, but a spoiled child. My grandmother chose me because I was a tomboy and they wanted to nip it in the bud. Lol. Didnt work. I believe everyone should do the things they want to. I appreciate your review. And I serve my husband and children before my self. (Unless it's ice cream). Lol. Gretchen

Good for you Gretchen. I agree.Back in your grandmothers day the men who worked hard labor came home and were doted on by their wives. However if that is not the case and if he doesn't have a handicap serving each other should be the norm in any household. Well done! Nancy:)

This was a kid who was spoiled. I wasn't having it. Lol. Thank you for your great review. Gretchen

You did a great job expressing your thoughts and feelings
about that situation, Gretchen. I thought your grandma must've
been from the 'old school' where females doted on males at their
every whim. The cake sounded awesome. It seemed to me some
of the females were showing off trying to be first to bring him
some of the delicious sounding cake. I loved your mother's reaction.
I believed she knew your heart and mind and was really proud of you.
Your conclusion about you and hubby working together was great.
Thanks for sharing, Jan

We, my husband and me, will do whatever it takes. Certain chores he likes and certain ones I like. Thank you so much for this awesome review. Gretchen

Well, good for you Gretchen. You remind me of my sister in this story. She was always extremely independent too and much more apt to think for herself than be dutifully obedient, like her younger sister. Thank you so much for sharing this well written story. I loved it.

I used to feel like an oddball. Then as I got older I realized it's okay to be different. Lol. Kudos to your sister. Thank you so much for this nice review. Gretchen

You speak of times that so many of us can relate to, but thankfully, most of us now live in a world where we can be accepted as who we are, not what we are supposed to be. I'm glad of most of the changes, but I sure do miss the regular dinners of fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and white milk gravy. Thanks for sharing.

Good for you! Not only for asserting yourself but for passing the valuable message to your daughters. There is enough in this world "of how we should be". Well done in more ways than one. Thank you for sharing. Refreshing. :)

I like this. The whole servitude mentality was always lost on me. I don't know why it was ever really tolerated in the first place. I applaud you for standing your ground even with Grandma pressuring you. It takes guts for an 8 year old to do. It's nice to see someone living their convictions.

It was how it always was before. Not a great reason but I guess it was enough of one. Thanks so much for this nice review. Gretchen

Don't hold that against your grandmother. That was how she was raised and the times she lived in.

Great write-up. Thank you for giving us a peek into your past. Very enjoyable!

She never cared for me, but you're right. It was how she was brought up and it was a different time. Thanks for this awesome review. Gretchen
