"The door of closure" is a fine and appropriate title for this sad piece. What a pity she didn't communicate her needs with you earlier. You are a thoughtful and reflective person, and better communication may have been sufficient for you both to make a new start. You have discribed your life journey very well, and I hope that the next door will open to real and lasting happiness and fulfilment. I would say you have a lot of love to offer if and when the time is right. Best wishes.
Wendy

I have read a few of your previous posts and this one is equally as good. You are a very good writer. Thank you for sharing this journey through life with us. I feel the title is excellent. Please keep us updated on your travels not only through life but the world.

I like your style. Technically I suppose it could be called an expansive haibun. Anyway it appeals to me.
You open your heart with courage and eloquently share its vulnerabilities and strengths. This makes the reader your confidante which again is appealing.
We all know that wherever we go we take our selves with us like our shadows. Yet perhaps the virtue of travel is that the essence of our inmost selves is mutable or perhaps faceted is a better word, so it presents differently away from familiar settings.
Yesterday I created a soul mandala - something like spontaneous artwork. Children do it all the time but we lose the knack with time. To my horrified amusement my soul turned out to be a slug in a blue hat!!!!

So on your travels you found a version of your soul. Closure? Maybe for the moment.

Thank you for sharing. Happy exploring!

Blessings Julia

That is quite the take. Blue Hat and a slug no less. Hmmm. Closure can be harsh or one big relief. This door certainly has a bit of both. Sincerely appreciate your thoughtfulness. Ciao.

This was a delightful journey your brought us on through Albufeira.

This last post you shared with us is very personal and it takes fortitude I believe to do so.

To me it seems like you're in a place of comfort with your life.

A post very well put together!

I enjoyed reading your story. Sometimes making a change can be therapeutic. Divorce is a difficult thing to get through but I can tell that your writing helps you. I also like your combination of haiku and prose.

Appreciate your review. I like interjecting something a little different to pause and thought into the moment. Thanks for recognizing that.

I do like the title of the "Door of Closure" because you open and close doors. And while you sought closure, you also opened yourself to new experiences and reflections and got to know yourself better. I am sorry about your divorce but that didn't happen in one year so she could have shared more instead of holding in "misery."

This final chapter of your journey is so soulful and sad. It brings tears to the eyes, a heaviness to the chest. You are the only one I've read here whose poetry (your choice always being the haiku, of course) becomes integral to the story line. It would be jolting to remove one. A couple of short notes I made as I read along:

An unknown world, 8,000 miles away, what could be more remote and perfect. [To be grammatically correct--or punctuationally correct -- you should not separate two complete sentences with a comma (though the first is admittedly more of a sentence fragment). You need, instead at least a semicolon or an ellipsis (...) or Em-dash (--); just not a comma.]

My greatest fear is death claiming me without someone being embraced by a love I am capable of providing. [What a profound thought, and ironic, no?]

A gritty and cogent piece, my friend.

Jay

I enjoyed reading this account of your life, the steps you have taken and the realizations you have reached. Loss, of any kind, takes time to get over and time will be with you until the end - so take it. When the dust settles you will see more clearly and breathe sweet life in again.
I particularly enjoyed the haiku additions within the body of this piece. And as for the title - Closure - beats Irony. Great photo - all that needs to be done is to now walk through the door to the other side to see what surprises are behind it.

Wow! You have had a rough time of it, buddy. I enjoyed your honesty as you opened up about your personal life. It sounds like your wife has moved on, and you must let her proceed. She may find out the grass isn't so green on the other side of the fence. But give her the privacy she needs right now. You never know, you may meet a nice woman any day. There's a whole planet filled with beautiful, interesting women... some who are as lonely as you.
I especially liked this part ...
"Although I did my very best to move on from my divorce, I was failing. The isolation of freedom in Albufeira was choking me. Some days I would wake up in a state of despair."
What a phrase! "The isolation of freedom" ... it's almost a contradiction until you study it. How can freedom be isolating? You can do anything you want. You can go anywhere you want. But no real contact with someone... that's missing. No friendship. No chats. You're like a prisoner.
This alone is worth the 6th star.
I notice that you slip into Senryu poetry, somewhat like a Haibun except a Haibun doesn't have as much prose. But still, the similarity is there.
If Judy ever decides she wants you back, please remember what she told you,
"I am in a good place. If you really love me, then you will close the door on this chapter of our lives. Please!"
I hope you meet someone worthy of your affection. Isn't it something that we need that special someone to be complete?
Nicely penned!
Good Luck in your travels!
Cheers,
Kimbob

One of the best posts I've read so far this year, Kaiku. You'll find that I like to give a thorough review. I think a lot of Fanstorians miss out when they only offer a couple of lines. You can learn from giving a good review.

I've seen your book advertised on the site. After reading this, I will be checking it out.
Your writing is insightful and heartfelt. You've drop the barrier and let the reader into you thoughts and soul.
Such wisdom in the closing:
"love is quite simple, all you have to do it allow it."
It doesn't so much speak closure or irony to me, but choosing another path full of possibility and, perhaps, adventures and fulfillment.

That`s very nice of you. My book is all about 5-7-5 if that is something you like. It covers a number of topics with most of the writings asking the reader to dig a little deeper and find something in their past that could be reflected upon. Your review is very thoughtful and appreciated. Thank you.
