Like you well written story. Chickadees are beautiful, tiny birds. The man thought the sound of the flute sounded like a songbird. If he would only have known, it was a flute played by a young girl.

This short story, The Hotel Piano Player, captures this nineteenth century slice of life in Wyoming and the sounds of the times. The slow blending, or possible appropriation of Shoshone music is acknowledged as Tom plays on.

Music connects people in different ways. Your story portrayed a warm solitude between these two characters and I loved that aspect of the story.

"The eyes of the young man startled her a second time, but as a Shoshone, she did her best to betray no emotion."> Did you mean to say, betray? I loved it! Best, JohnC

An interesting entry for the - Alone writing contest.
I like how two seemingly lonely people are connected by the sound of music. Not only does the melody haunt but the meeting of their eyes. An imaginative story. Well done.

This is a mystical story with a warm sentiment and eerie connotations. Music connects people to each other without the need for speech. Your sensitive words are delivered to the reader with an atmospheric ambiance of native America and I enjoyed the peek into another world here Crystie, much enjoyed, love Dolly x

Thank you for a thoughtful review. Guess I have a tendency to live in at least two worlds at a time, ha ha.

Very artfully told! It makes me wonder about the relationship between Tom and Lomasi and how they almost connected through the universal language of music. But because of their different backgrounds, they remain alone. Best wishes in the contest!

Thank you for a superb, perceptive review. I like to think music overcomes a lot, but that century would have been difficult to do so, as you say.

that was a lovely story, but, of course, I'd hoped the girl would stay and he would play her song again. However, I liked Tom's optimism.
But, to birds, I have chickadees that have a black head , but they also have 2 white places on their neck in front. Darling little birds.
Interesting story, well told.

Thank you for your super nice review. So much we take for granted with multicultural sharing now would have run into social barriers in the nineteenth century.

I wanted the piano player and the young Shoshone girl to meet at the end, but the image leaves the reader to wonder and even continue the story on their own.
I love the way you compare the flute to the chickadee.
Nice job.

This was great! I love all of the detail and the various elements that were working together.

One fine tune that you may consider:

Another tin cup was on top of his upright Fischer piano to hold tips
( the word 'another' threw me for a loop. Maybe a different word? Just my two cents.

Seems like there are gonna be a lot of great pieces in the Alone Contest.

Thank you so much for reading and reviewing. I guess I meant to say there was another cup, not for drinking, that was made of tin. I'll go back and correct that.
