You know that fellow quite well, don't you? He may be solitary, but he is usually quite able to take care of himself. Dogs don't stand a chance against him.

Thank you. I do know skunks quite well. Here in Michigan, we have lots of the stinky critters. They get squashed on the roads and stink up every car that goes by.

Ok. You got me. First off I thought it was a bitter man, then a dog, then a cat. But never once did the thought of a skunk enter my train of thought. I'm sure he has a great personality but I could smell him from here. Lol. This was a fun read with an equally fun surprise ending. Gretchen

You did have us guessing in the beginning, middle of your story, but in the end, we did find out that you were talking about an animal called a skunk. I had a neighbor who had a pet skunk, she had him fixed.

Thank you. I had a baby skunk that I intended to get fixed, but he mysteriously escaped. I think my husband had something to do with the escape. LOl

Wonderfully creative entry! That hint of a mother's love drags the reader down the human road only to find out they have been fooled by a skunk. I love it.
About 55 years ago, we lived in a house without AC and my husband and I had opened the back door to let in what little cool breeze there was. Our kids were asleep in bed and Ron and I were watching TV in the semi-darkness. We heard a noise in the kitchen, took a look to see two skunks in our turned-over trash trash cans. Being the weird thinkers we sometimes were, we went quietly down the hall, awakened our three kids, cautioning quietness as we led them down the hall and toward the kitchen.
In the darkness, the 4 of us stood, watching the two skunks complete their destruction of our trash, turn and walk out the back door!
This is still a memory that is still taken out and enjoyed at many family get-togethers. I can still see them in my mind and remember how exciting it was -- we must have been hard up for excitement. lol
Great post. ann

Okay, you got me in.
I was imagining all sorts of things but definitely not a skunk.
Cleverly written and the build up is impressive- the ending even more so.
Blessings

Ha,Ha! I like the ending twist! You got me! I was t4ravelling along so well contemplating this loner of a man and his life of "come and go." I wondered to how he handled dogs so that they'd never bother him. Now I know!! I great piece of writing and suits the contest really well. Best wishes!

This starts out making you think the "I" is a human writing about the solitary life he or she likes. The twist at the end takes you completely by surprise.
Well done!

This story, I Like It that Way, provides the readers with a testimony from te speaker on his love of being unattached to others and living an insular existence. Being a skunk makes that all make sense.

Of this one thing you can be absolutely certain, I will never get anywhere near you on purpose. Once I discover your presence, I will quickly leave your vicinity. No worries, no problems. As you are fairly recognizable on sight, I will leave you to yourself as quickly as possible.

Thank you. I can't say as I blame you. We have lots of skunks here in Michigan. Sometimes one get squashed on the road then stinks up every car that goes by.
