These shootings happen way too often. It's very scary indeed to listen to the news and hear about the school shootings. We heard about the Stockton, California. This last week, Monday, there were four shootings in the United States. What a tragedy!

This is such a devastating read, Gypsy. Your writing is moving and the facts that you site in your notes, makes this all the more anguishing and memorable. Thank you very much.

Another fine write, Gypsy----and you're right, it's utter madness out there. I get so angry I yell at my T.V. when I listen to a Republican try to justify doing absolutely nothing about it. "It's a mental heath issue" of course it is, but how about trying to stop an angry, mentally--disturbed dude from getting his hands on a weapon of war?

The horror of America's love affair with guns seems to be never ending. I don't know what it will take to finally get the NRA to loosen its grip on this country so that we can ban assault rifles and make stricter checks on people buying a weapon. I am glad your son was okay.

These shootings are a terrible statement for society today. As former law enforcement, it shocks and saddens me that we can't/don't have a black list for people who 100% who shouldn't have guns.

I support hunters and the Second Amendment but are we saying that we really can't keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill, even with a doctor's recommendation? Oh my, my, my . . .

What a heartbreaking contest entry, Gypsy. It would be
true for all involved. I don't know why school shootings
happen. However, the drills have become necessary even
more so in recent years. I imagine parents would be terrified
if/when they found out about a shooting such as you described.
I imagine the pain and fear continue for a lifetime. I'm about 200
miles from the one at Uvalde last May.
Thanks for sharing and best wishes in the contest, Jan

Wow, Gypsy, that is a horrifying thought, not knowing if your child lives or dies. The numbers you share in your notes are equally as horrifying. My husband is a teacher, and they regularly do these drills. He's also in the building when the local SWAT teams do theirs (no students on those days).

One suggestion to consider: In the sentence, 'Two blocks were blocked so I ran.' maybe change 'blocked' to 'closed' so that you're not repeating the same word?

Thank you for sharing your story, and best wishes in the contest.

This is a horrible thing, and it sounds like it must have been scary. I wish no one ever had to go through this. I worry about my sister (a teacher) and our minions (her school-age kids) every time I see something like this in the news. Sending love and support to you.
