What a tragedy. We've had this type of incident happen at Christmas time when the parade has been marching on the street. A driver plowed into the parade killing several. You did great in writing your horrible story. If we do not forgive, we could not live with ourselves or God.

Well said. I often think of the senseless murders we deal with in this country and how we need more forgiveness - all around. Loved your story. I liked the staccato style you used to show the confusion and raise the tension of the scene. Very good. Good luck in the contest. Thanks for sharing it and stay well.

As a fellow believer I live in awe of that decision to forgive the drug addled killer of their very precious children, there is no greater gift than to parent a child, and certainly no greater tragedy to have that blessing destroyed. Beautifully written my friend, blessings Roy

Thank you very much Roy for your very empathetic review. The power of forgiveness was increased because of the horror of the situation!

What a shocking story this was and very well-written. There is no greater horror for a parent than to lose children for any reason, especially to a senseless act of irresponsibility.
I don't think I would have the grace to blanketly forgive the perpetrator of this horror, unless maybe he or she was just a dumb, young kid. I guess I would have to get to know the person before I would consider forgiving them. I honestly don't think forgiving a person who doesn't deserve forgiveness would give me any relief or healing.
This was an excellent, thought-provoking story.

Thank you for your empathetic response and honest thoughts about forgiveness. I think they forgave him, in order to know that they were doing the right thing in God's eyes, and therefore have His peace. The driver didn't deserve forgiveness. Forgiveness in the face of such horror would certainly need God's grace, and His help.

A good effort to describe the pain and suffering of a tragedy. At first I didn't understand your point because you did a good job at the beginning of drawing the reader into the scene, but the horror of the event wasn't really your point, it was the healing value of forgiveness you were really trying to convey...so I am not sure the beginning really fit. But, it did draw me into the article and that is also something you wanted to do.

Thank you for reviewing and for your thoughts. The story was to be a horror story with children in it, so that was my primary goal. Howwever in their situation being able to forgive was an important subsequent element, which powerfully impacted the whole nation, so while remembering the horror we are also challenged with their reaction. Hope that helps to explain.

This is a haunting, chilling, saddening read. You have conveyed well the complex mix of emotions of shock, horror, grief. I am moved by the families who chose forgiveness in such a challenging time in in their lives. Peace and prayers for them.

Thank you very much Sherry, for your very empathetic review. I cannot imagine having to go through that experience, and forgiveness is always a hard decision. Especially in such extreme circumstances.

Thank you for reviewing. No, it's not for children to read, it's a horror story with children in it, it's about them but not for them. As you say, it would be too distressing.

So heartbreaking and emotional. What a horrifying story.
This line resonated with me,
"...he faced a choice to take a "path of destruction or a path of construction".
So true. Well written rose and follows a clear narrative.

Was (there) hope, not (their). Besides that, it is a well-written story with a lot of emotion in every line. I can relate to this story. My son was shot and killed by another young man while hunting. I never once blamed the boy who shot my son. Best of luck in the contest.

Thank you very much for reviewing carefully - don't know how that spelling error slipped past me, but I appreciate your catching it. Sorry too to hear about your own dreadful loss!
