You have written a wonderful tribute to a very successful runner. I cannot help but admire him from reading your words. Your poetic form is smooth and brings forth the character of this man.

What a cleverly written tribute. I like the repetition of his name and the ease which which it all rhymed. Mostly, I like the undertone of affection for a fellow runner.

This is a lovely tribute to your friend. It's great that his last name had so many things it would rhyme with. He sounds like a remarkable man who maybe lived so long just because of his running. Very well-written poem that is well proofread.

What a high tribute you paid to a person whose inspiration you can look up to even coming from the other side of the grave. Carlton Mendell sounds like the type of person I'd like to know, to sit down with and talk about life's lessons and delights as well as pitfalls to avoid. I'm not a runner. Never have been. But Carlton can thank you for the fact that you know how to coax out the best that was in Carlton Mendell and make his legacy larger than life. I hope you do well in the contest.

Very nice tribute to your friend and running partner Carlton Mendell. Your word choice was excellent and helps the reader "feel" your emotion through those choice words.

My condolences and best of luck in the contest!

Hi Mystery Author,
What a great entry for the "Tributes" contest! I love how you ened every other verse with "something, something Carlton Mendell." Very effective repetition.
Carlton is already my hero, too. I started running in 2006, when I was 55 years old. I knew I only had 5 more years until retirement. So I wanted to get in shape.
We have a trail in Grand Bay that the village made between the road and railway tracks. Lots of trees and bushes. Ups and downs. It's like running through the woods. By 2008, I was running over 300 miles, and most of them were around 24-25 minutes. That's not bad for 3 miles, eh? And an old man.
Well, in 2012, I discovered my heart was skipping beats. Tests followed, and doctors declared no more fast jogs. I had a narrowed aortic valve. If I am careful, and eat properly, I may never need an operation. If I do, it will likely be for an artificial valve. I'm 72 now, and I just walk at a good clip. Last year, I did 207 miles. I would have done more if not for a bad right hip that bothered me all summer. So that's my story. Like you, I love to run. But my running days are over. And do I ever miss it.
Sounds like you admired Carlton. He was a special guy. No wonder he made it into his 90s. That's my goal, too. And yours, I hope.
This is well-written. A fine tribute to someone you respected.
Good Luck in the contest!
Cheers,
Kimbob

Thanks, Kimbob. Like you, my aches and pains have caught up with me, but as soon as the snow goes, I'm going to give it another try. I'm 78 and hope to be around a while longer.

Carlton Mendell sounds like a person we all would have been fortunate to know. His athletic skills as a runner sound remarkable. This is a beautiful tribute in rhyme, to who he was and how you learned from him. I wish you the best in the Tribute contest.
